Needlework in Scotland

Hi All,

I'm interested in taking up cross-stitch or some other style of needlework, but I'm hopeless at learning from books. I was wondering, are there any sewing-circles, or groups, or classes etc in the East of Scotland (Dundee - Arbroath area)?

It may be a shot in the dark, but hopefully no harm in asking. :)

Have you inquired at your local church? There are often groups of ladies who enjoy all sorts of needlwork and stitchery, and who welcome newcomers and beginners.

Are there any Polytechniques in the area ? If so they would be in charge of City and Guilds and could likely tell if there are organised groups. It is nice to join a stitching group, fastest way to learn and very companionable.

Bruce in Orkney may be more able to help when he reads your post.

Try the Scottish Women's Rural Institute (SWRI)

In 1978 the SWRI in Brora, Sutherland ran a series of classes in cross-stitch which was how it was that Maureen came to be taught by a lady from the Royal School of Needlework; Maureen was always having her wrists smacked for licking the end of her cotton (or was it thread, silk, floss...)

I'm glad that you found my blog & website to be of interest. Winter in Orkney is windy, wet & cold but on Stronsay we rarely have frost because nowhere is more than half a mile from the sea and it has snowed twice since we moved up here in 2004. We've an outside water tap for watering the garden, it's been there for over 20 years, it isn't lagged and it has never frozen up. The wind is the main problem in the winter, storm F10 is not uncommon and we had hurricane F12 in Jan 2005, see . When the weather is really bad you simply stay at home, almost everyone has oil-fired central heating and double-glazing so as long as the electricity isn't cut off we're OK; and if the electricity fails then we have portable gas heaters and portable battery-driven lanterns (the sort that you "wind up", 30 seconds winding gives about 25 minutes of light). However, over the last four years the price of heating oil has risen from 22 pence a litre to nearly 68 pence a litre. If you ever manage to make it to Stronsay be sure to look us up, we're opposite the Post Office at the end of Whitehall village.

Dear Vixola, This might be strange. But pick up a kids craft kit on cross stitch.Very simple and items are small to do,easy directions. Also try a nursing home in your area if you have them in Scotland. You might find a willing person older in years willing to teach you. Barbara
