Off topic - extra special gift from above

Way back when, when DD was just learning to skate and play hockey, her coach was a sweetheart of a guy. In fact, the whole family was pretty special. I'd bounce the baby during family skates and games. Well, after a great year and lots of "see you next season", the coach and his sons weren't there next season. But, they had talked about moving, so maybe they had.

No - the oldest boy had cancer and it wasn't going well. Offered to baby-sit and do what we could. And then, the youngest came back to hockey and all was pretty decent. Lots of healing to do and GrandMama ( a bit of a dragon) had come to live with them. And then he relapsed and it was really bad. And silence.

Heavens knows, you didn't want to call. But danged if I don't think of them every time I walk into the rink

Well, yesterday I got a gift - I saw Mom and that sweet baby (now age 5) at the local Trader Joe's. The oldest is doing well; he and his brother have lost all interest in hockey, but the other daughter just started playing hockey on the developmental team. So I'll see them around the rink soon.

It was truly one of those situations where you don't dare call for fear of the worst - reopening wounds. ( he was that close to dying ) To know they are all fine and doing well was such a blessing. I was closer to the Dad and the kids, Mom (and her Mom) weren't sure how to take the rather sibling like bond that sprang up between us. It was really like he was my younger brother/cousin.

DD might be getting goalie skates for Xmas and will go to the development team sessions when her schedule allows.
