Off topic reading for the musically inclined

I just finished "Clapton's Guitar: Watching Wayne Henderson Build the Perfect Instrument" by Allen StJohn. What a great read. I had checked it out for DH to read, but, since he enjoyed it so much, I read it. Now, I can't play guitar, but I do enjoy listening to guitar music in many forms.

Well, I may have just become a convert to bluegrass. While the DH was learning about collecting guitars, I was going off to Itunes and listen to clips of various songs or players mentioned. Ok - I learned about being a luthier and the insides of a guitar too, but it was the music that grabbed me.

Who should post about a few other books as well.

Well, shoot, Cheryl! We have got to stop feeding each other's book habits! This sounds interesting because my manager collects guitars and I played for a short period of time back in my teens, until I turned into a girl and wanted fingernails. He's been encouraging me to pick it back up and I've been seriously thinking about it. Tegan

Cheryl -

Check out the book by Grit Laskin (A Guitarmaker's Canvas: The Inlay Art of Grit Laskin), who is a luthier in Canada who designs *gorgeous* guitars with inlay - as much fine artist as luthier.

(Also, the main character in Charles de Lint's fantasy novel "Trader" is loosely based on Grit Laskin...and I know you enjoy fantasy, too!)

Now having said that, how do they sound? ;)

I haven't read any de Lint, I'll have to soon. The library is on my hit list for today or tomorrow! C

Wonderful, I'm told. I've only heard one in person that I know of: James Keelaghan's "Orion"-themed guitar. And there are some pretty impressive names on his "testimonials" page: Beppe Gambetta, Tom Chapin, Sally Rogers, Ottmar Liebert, and even owners of other top-notch guitar companies such as Taylor and Collings.

Good enough for me!

Tell me, have you ever heard of Wayne Henderson? Talk about opening an entire new world!

I'd heard about him when the book came out (we got a copy for review in Dirty Linen) and seen references on the Crooked Road website:

I am seriously considering some of his CD's - and I have to admit that the YoYo Ma recordings of the Appalachian pieces are calling me too!
