OFF TOPIC - think of me this weekend

And send thought of strength and patience.

It's GS camping weekend, it is going to rain and rain and rain and I have the three nosiest girls in my truck (both directions).

At least we are in cabins, I can teach knots and gimp.

gimp????

Plastic lacing, rexlace, boondoggle cord.

Sort of plastic, flat "cord" used to make lanyards and such craft items. Why "gimp" or "gymp" I have no clue....

Thank heaven for cabins! One of the memories of Girl Scouting I share with DGFs when we get together was a "camp in" in a local park when we pitched tents. The sky opened, and our tent was adjacent to the craft area. So the leaders shoved 12 girls into our 4-person tent, then said, "Nobody touch the sides or the roof or the water will come in!"

We still laugh over that.

Gimp used to be the stuff (sort of ornamental trim) that you see round the edges of a lampshade etc. There is a vague resemblance in the look of the plastic stuff when its worked up for it to generate that name.

I think the silk cord is also used a lot for upholstery trim and to make heavy tassels.

Yup, also you see it in rayon blends, etc - I think of gimp as you do - the upholstery trim cord. Through my many years of summer camp, etc., we always just called the flat plastic cord on a reel "lanyard" cord . I'm sure we did with it what Cheryl is referring to - but I never heard it called gimp. May be a regional thing.

My favorite camping kind of story - thinking of Sue H - is similar. The kids in camp for 8 full weeks would have 2 overnight camping trips to Pisgah National forest - usually. Depending on age - they could be 1 or 2 nights away. The 4-weekers would have 1 trip. Anyhow, there were always "overnight" specialists on the staff - a couple of guys with forestry experience, camping, nature stuff. When they weren't away on overnights, they'd do the "nature" sessions at camp. Generally there wasn't a female overnight specialist, so myself or a couple of the other senior female staff with experience would add-in with the guys for some of the girls' trips. On one of these brilliant trips - I was going out to meet them in the evening - post dinner - stay over - do the day thing - and come'on back. Sometimes if it was the little guys, I'd go out - they're just so cute. Anyhow, this night - went out - with just the bronco. The kids had been deposited early in the day via the camp bus, with some provisions. We had a campsite that was being used for several days, so the tents were there already. I came out with the beat up old Bronco, some extra provisions, and to hang-out. It had started raining, but not too bad, and I was able to drive in pretty close. Get there, the guys and I are a bit concerned due to rain, but, what the heck. We tell the girls - just don't poke, touch, the sides, top of the tents, the normal try not to get leaks stuff. About 5 a.m - waking up in the dark to things sliding in the mud - we were totally flooded - and it's before cell phone days! What fun - trying to grab stuff into the bronco - getting the screeching 13 yr old girls up in the dark, to bundle up, and sending someoene to get the bus back so that we can hike out and meet them. The camp was close to a very low streamlet - and the rain had worsened, so the stream was runnning fast, and we had a real mud slip'n'slide going all around. What fun. I think by the time we got them back to camp some hours later, they were happy to take real showers, and just hang out. But, the picture of our optimistic it'll be ok, followed by awakening in the squishing out into the mudslide, and all these concerned with their cuteness young teens - it was something.

Sigh - DD bridges in a few weeks and then to Juniors for as long as that lasts. We'll Juilette and continue that way. She wants to play hockey and do active things and this group is not the best place for her.

Are you staying at a GS camp? If so, which one? I worked at Camp Seawood one summer and we visited all the other camps in the council. Ah those were the days.

There is another use for 'gimp'

Some recreations vehicle ( aka 'camper' or 'caravan') manufactureres use gimp where inside walls and/or ceiling/wall meet. They don't always come together perfectly and the gimp fills the gap. In this case it is a cord wrapped in vinyl or whatever the ceiling or walls are covered with.

We still live in one of these coaches and when we attend product shows to see the latest styles and improvements, we hear salesmen talk about their opinion of the gimp. Sometimes its use as a color trim looks pretty nice. Other times it obviously hides sloppy joining of panels. Barbara T

We were at Chenoa in Antrim. DD has gone to Winnahuppe (day camp), Chenoa and Farnsworth for summer camp. Seawood is a day camp now.

A quick look shows that Chenoa wasn't a camp back in my day...it's only 16 years old. Thanks for dredging up some memories!
