OT: Carpet Cleaners

I am hoping some of you have opinions on home carpet cleaners. I think I will buy one but there seems to be several different machines and I haven't a clue which one does the best job.

We have a Hoover SteamVac Deluxe, and like it very much. With four dogs, ours is a necessity!

Of course, Jere, we just have TWO dachsies; however we also have the Hoover SteamVac, but not the DeLuxe. It seems to work very nicely, and in fact it is something we need to do shortly! DH does the puching the sucker back and forth, while I am the water dumper and filler!

My IDEAL tool for carpet cleaning is a checkbook, and let someone else do it!

Gillian, you are a person after my own heart. I remember the days when I did have a carpet cleaner and a husband to push it around. It was a very heavy duty job and I don't think I would want to tackle it alone.

Easy to use ? Gets the stains out ? I feel I need one because of Mr Bucket, spot removers don't seem to be making much inroad where the beast vomited.

I don't want to be bothered with paying for whole room cleaning (and moving stuff) that's why I thought my own cleaner would be a better idea. If they work well.

Before you buy an electric one you might want to try the stuff the store where I bought my carpet gave me. It took out two really bad stains, one was most of a cup of coffee, with milk and the other was a spot where Puff threw up.

I think you would need to buy it at a carpet store. The name is R2X Stain & Soil Remover and it's made by Shaw. Shaw is a carpet manufacturer. It worked for me.

If you would like I can call my carpet store and ask them if they have it, or can get it again, and I would be glad to send it to you.

Heh, heh!! I have hardwood floors and orientals. If a rug is dirty and spot cleaning does not fix it, I just roll it up and have the "little man" come get it and take it away, then bring it back nice and clean. On the other hand, we did once wash an old oriental I had bought in an estate sale. I was having one of my fits of economy, so put it on the porch, sprayed it back and front with detergent, rubbed it in, then used ammonia followed by vinegar to remove the pet stains, then turned the hose on it and dragged the rinse water out with the wet/dry vac. It came out just perfect, but I wouldn't do it again.

Ah yes, having someone else do it would be lovely, but by the time I finishing getting ready for the cleaning, I might as well go ahead and do it myself.

We have three LONG-HAIRED dachsies, plus a golden retriever. Talk about dog hair....

Vomit is hard to get out, probably because of the stain from the color of the food brought up.

We scrub the floor with Resolve pet carpet cleaner, and then use the shampooer, and you can't tell anything ever happened -- even when my older dachsie eats a lot of dirt and vomits it up, and it comes out black, yes black, ick, ick, ick.

I have the Hoover Steam Vac as well. It does a good job, but after a few years the hoses have cracked and the stair attachment leaks water.

I recently rented a Rug Doctor and it did a better job but it retails for around 400.00. I rented it for 20.00 plus 7.00 for the steam cleaner solution. I was impressed with the brushing action.

I thought about that (renting) but my car isn't the best for dragging one home and I felt defeated by the thought of doing it, so that is why I figured owning a machine would be good. I only have two carpeted rooms, the rest is hardwood so I suspect I will go out before I wear out a machine lol

I tried Resolve first off, then an industrial one the super gave me, but after a couple of weeks, it's back.

Glad you mention the stain of the food colour. I actually 'phoned Purina and asked them why they put food colouring in dry food. The woman got all steamed up and denied they did. I asked her to tell me how much food she consumes that is bright pink or gold - really! This was very much undigested food and the same colour as it went in his mouth.

I still wonder though - for a cat that is rarely sick, why on the white bedroom carpet ? Right in the doorway where it is most noticeable, not on the far side of the bed ? He could have done it on the hardwood or the navy toned rug ?

We only use cat food with no dyes in it for precisely this reason. It does make things easier to clean up.

You ask this, and you have a cat? ;-)

Are they specialty foods, or regular makes at the stupidmarket ? I could certainly be interested against another attack.

Makes you wonder doesn't it ?

Animals know where their poops and upchucks will do the most harm. Don't ask me how, but they know. They also know about new comforters or duvets, and about doing it right in the traffic path for maximum slippage by their "staff" when you walk through the house in the dark.

I agree that Resolve doesn't "resolve" things permanently -- I just was saying we use that first, and then use the Hoover shampooer. That seems to work out the best for us.

My sister in law in the UK has a small very light weigh cleaner looks like a small upright vacuum and is very light and easy to use. Not sure what kind it is. But she uses it regularly for shampooing the kitchen carpet. Yes kitchen carpet. You might be able to bring one back . Cheers,

So do I. Only the bedroom has carpeting. Hate the color, so it's fine with me if someone wants to urp on it and the coloring in the cat food makes it a bit browner.

Oh yeah. I've seen them run in from outside so they can upchuck on the carpet. Main traffic areas seem to be particularly attractive.

The best spot cleaner I've used is called Zep Commercial Spot Carpet Cleaner. I got it at Home Depot.

We feed Iams, which is at my grocery store. I think there are other dye-free grocery store brands as well.
