OT: Carpet Cleaners

I have had two hoover cleaners and they broke very easily and they were hard to clean or work on. I now have a Royal that the guy, that fixes the Hoovers, recommended. So far I really love it. It has a separate tank for the soap and so there is less waste. The soap can be turned off and you can rinse the carpet. The brushes can be turned off and are easy to clean. It does a nice job and has a three year waranty. Most important though, the guy at the repair shop says that he never gets them back to be fixed. Judy

That's a good point as I am against renting a machine because of hauling it to and from. Thanks.

I have a Bissell upright

find that just using *HOT* tap water in it instead of detergent it cleans just as well.

Since we took in a rescued dog, we also bought a Bissell Spot Bot for the oopsies (also works well on cat-urks), and it too works just fine with *HOT* water instead of detergent - as a matter of fact, it cleans better than the upright, so it leaves a *clean* spot in the carpet!!!

reason for just using plain water? They never get all the detergent out of the carpet, and detergent dries sticky (like a soda pop would) and therefore seems to attract more dirt. And with the water hot, it cuts through any grease as well. I have been known to use a enzymatic cleaner, like Nature's Miracle, in either one of the carpet cleaners, to freshen the smell of the carpet. I also like to run the Spot Bot once or twice with the reservoir *empty* so that it has a chance to suck up any of the excess liquid that it possibly can, then place a towel over the spot(s) to keep dirt from sticking to the damp carpet.

That's interesting because I felt that the spots was out originally but that it gradually came back. Probably because as you said, not all the stuff was out, although I did really go at it with clean rag etc.

That is so much easier with my new machine. It does seem like it is a bit more work to push this brand than the Hoover though, or maybe I am just in worse shape now. Judy

I think the conversation is about wall-to-wall carpeting.

Frankly, I th> Turn the rug face down , brush and than soak spots with 1/2 water 1/2 > viniger ,

When I rented the Rug Steamer, I first used the solution. Then I went over the area 2 more times with just hot water. The water was still coming back discolored. I probably could have redone more times, but you only have 24 hours and so much energy!

All this and my rugs really didn't look very dirty to start with and I don't have any pets. I also vaccuum just about daily, at least around my stitching/crocheting area. I was just sprucing up for the holidays. It makes me think about how dirty carpets really are. Ewww!

It's why I couldn't wait to get rid of our carpets and have our maple floors refinished. We still have carpeting up the stairs, and it is a dust mess. We'll have to redo the treads and I can't wait to get rid of that carpeting! The only room with a rug will be our bedroom.

Carpeting does not last like they say it does. And, once cleaned, it looses it's ability to sluff off dirt readily. Just like new clothing that you purchase. Once washed, it no longer has that "finish". Spots are notorious for coming back after cleaning. And dry rot is a very real problem with carpeting that is old.

I have to reapply some polyurethane at my piano, since the bench has worn the finish off in a large area. I look forward to that in the spring. :-)

Have you tried those felt things that attach at the bottom of the leg of furniture on your piano bench. I bought some at Home Depot and they lasted a pretty long time. I used them on the kitchen chairs and benches (Ihave a corner set) after I unstalled ceramic tile. They do need replacing every now and again, but are cheap.

I am going to try to talk to DH about ripping out those carpets, but he LOVEs carpeting. We have electric heat and the floors can be cold. But that is why I love slippers. We have hardwood floors that have been covered by carpeting since the home was built, so I think with some sanding and coatings, they will be beautiful. Wish me luck.

You are right about washing the carpeting. It doesn't ever really look nice again, and those spots keep re-appearing. And it wears down, making it hard to re-arrange furniture due to color fading and dents that just won't come out. When I took out the previous owners carpet, it just tore out with one hand because of dry rot.

I use those on the diningroom chairs, wonderful. Makes it easier to move stuff too.

I don't like hardwood in my bedroom though, I find it 'cold'. It might be different in a southern clime, but up here, carpeting lends warmth. I have cement floors so hardwood on top does not lend itself to feeling warm. I only have carpeting in two rooms but his nibs has sure put a blot on the white bedroom carpet :) I suppose it's no wonder pet less people think we, who have pets, are crazy.

I bought the Spot Bot today, very difficult tracking it down but now I am in possession of one. Done the spot on the white carpet and all looks very good, here's hoping it will remain that way..

Just now doing some other mistakes in the other room, so nice to have nothing to do with cleaning part lol
