Other nations have their national sports, and lots of TV coverage. Here in Canada we have been absolutley inundated with curling; a sport I love to watch on TV. The Olympics, The Tournament of Hearts (Canadian women's championship), The Brier (Canadian men's championship), World Junior's in Korea, and now the Women's Worlds in Grand Prairie. However, for sports fans south of the border, I thought I would give a head's up for the Men's Worlds, taking place in Lowell Mass. from 1st to 9th April. I dont know how much coverage there will be on US TV, but if you are sports fans and you get a chance, you might like to look at some of the action. Curling etiquette requires the maximum of sportsmanship. The game itself is the viscous use of your opponents rocks to score, but everyone behaves in a manner which is almost unknown in other sports. There are virtually no penalties, and there is absolutely no such thing as a "good" penalty. I guarantee the players will behave in what can only be described as an old fashioned gentlemanly way. Anyway, if it comes on US TV, maybe some of you might like to take a look.

A fine of $1000 was levied at the Brier here in Regina this week for unsportsmanlike conduct--breaking a broom on the ice and kicking rocks. Dawne

We love to watch "Curling" too, Jim - which started in Scotland centuries ago. Must say I cackled at the unintentional funny, though. Sounds a bit painful, too.

My husband enjoyed watching curling on the Olympics on TV so when he found out it was coming to Lowell he bought tickets. We live in Chelmsford the next town over. It goes on for awhile and I guess I'll watch some too. I never heard of curling before the last Olympics in Salt Lake.
I used to work with a gentleman who was raised on a farm in Minnesota - Bemidji actually which is where most of the US Olympic team hails from. He tried to explain the sport in great detail to me but I will admit it would have made more sense to have been watching a match while he did so - much was lost in translation :)

The Tsongas arena makes sense, its the only place I can think of that could have it. I will have to look into tickets when I get home from work. Its only 10 minutes up the road from me.

Although I watched most of the games that were televised I missed that incident. Could you elaborate Dawne? I'm almost afraid to ask as the Nova Scotia team members were bickering amongst themselves!

If you get to see any curling, including four Canadians wearing red maple leafs, dont be surprized to hear them speaking a mixture of both French and English. They come from Quebec. And am I happy to see four Quebecois proudly wearing those maple leafs!!!

Thanks for the link Dawne! I thought it was rather arrogant of Stoughton to think the crowds loved watching him throw a hissy fit. It's not the way you expect a mature athlete to behave, especially in curling. Hopefully the fine will discourage him and others from future outbursts. The World Women's Curling has some surprising results so far!
