I do know what you mean, although yours sounds extra difficult. I was stuck for a long time on my Connecticut ancestry, because Samuel was an incredibly popular first name when my great, great grandfather was born. I eventually sorted mine out from the others only because my great grandmother's cousin (whose name I knew because my mother wrote to her as a little girl) turned out to be buried with 4 generations of ancestors, including 2 more Samuels and a _Uriah_ . Uriah was mentioned in books about the town. He wasn't the only Uriah with the relevant surname, but he was the only one whose wife was Jane.
