It's much too hot for February, and it's ridiculous to have the central air going, but to each his own.

My niece in Kentucky is in the hospital awaiting an insulin pump and they are rushing it because she just found out she's pregnant. So they have her in the hospital to stay calm and unstressed while they wait and what happens?!? They pull her out in the hallway during the night with everyone panicky.

The hospital was not damaged and their house was ok except for two trees down and the roof partly off the barn. Their little girl's play castle was across the road, but that was it. Whew!! Jim -- am I correct in remembering that I read somewhere that COWS produce more "global warming" gasses than automobiles do? I found that to be rather humorous :-). The most we can do is to CONTRIBUTE to changes in the environment that are completely normal changes in the life cycle of the earth & sun. This does not mean that we -- especially Americans -- should stop being concerned, far the opposite. We STILL need to "reduce, reuse, recycle", look for alternate types of fuels, be more conscious of how we treat Mother Earth, etc. But WE are not the main cause of global warming or ANY of the changes in the life cycle of Mother Earth -- never have been and never will be. IIRC, it was Arthur C. Clarke who said that, try as we might, humans will NEVER be able to "destroy" the earth. Mother Earth will be here long after we poor miserable little creatures have gone the way of the dinosaurs and She will have healed herself of any small trauma we might cause her. While we are living on the earth, we can certainly screw things up and CONTRIBUTE to changes in the environment, etc. Those who want to scream about how we are killing the earth need to change their tune. We can not destroy the earth, we can only destroy OUR way of life on the earth -- and that's bad enough!!

Aren't they amazing? Especially the tulips. But then a friend reminded me that the original tulips came from the mountains of Turkey, and are very hardy. My favourites are the species tulips (Tulipa Turkestana, and Tulipa Tarda). Not only are the very hardy, but they multiply. Most are small (5-6 inches high), but the Tulipa Gregii are 12 inches.

Now if I could only find a reliable way of keeping the 'furry tailed rats' (a.k.a. squirrels) from eating them). I've tried just about everything under the sun with varying amounts of success.

There's only one flaw to your logic, Tia Mary: domesticated cows are a human invention. If people ate less meat (not no meat, mind you), there would be fewer cows and less greenhouse gas emitted. Farming as currently practiced (irrigation, fertilizer, massive amounts of animal waste) is one of the main sources of environmental destruction.

I don't have a green thumb and would much rather stitch or read than garden, but I have a lovely bulb garden where I concentrate my rather dismal efforts. (Now that we have cable and I've seen the show, I live in fear that our neighbors will report us to that "ugliest yard on the block makeover" show). Lots of tulips and jonquils of varying sizes and colors and different timing, so March through mid-May it's just gorgeous. After those are done, I do one planting of nasturtiums and hope for the best

I didn't used to bother with crocuses, because the rabbits eat them. But then for several years the foxes ate the rabbits, and I could have crocuses again. The rabbits are back, though, so who knows how long the crocuses will last.

May I suggest you consider daylilies for the rest of the year? I've found them to be incredibly easy to grow and they come in tons of colors with tons of bloom times across the summer and early fall. I'm sure Cheryl I. would love to tell you more about them. She enables me consistently in my expansion of daylily plantings.

Tia Mary, basically you are absolutely correct. We need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels; eventually they are going to run out, and then what do we do. We desperately need to get rid of pollution. The nub of the problem is the generation of electricity. Without electricity in plentiful supply, our way of life simply disintegrates. Look what has happened in South Africa, and the current argument in Europe. It is expensive, but we have clean coal technology, and, for the moment, a plentiful supply of coal. However, burning coal produces CO2, and the warmaholics have convinced the population and hence our politicians that this is bad. The trouble is that for the moment there is no substitute for coal to produce all our electricity needs. And this is the bind our politicians are in. Do they listen to the warmaholics, and ruin the economy, as they have in South Africa, and they are proposing to do in Europe.

Some people dont realize that daffodils are poisonous. So they are generally good when you have pesky things that like to eat bulbs.

Hie thee to a garden store to get some Liquid Fence (essentially fox pee). Organic and works *great* at repelling those wascally wabbits! It's kind of spendy but is economically better if you can afford the bottle of concentrate and dilute it down. I would never see my tulips/ daffodils, etc. with the rabbits at my place, living in the country as I do, without it.
