Interesting, because I was given to believe that Pakistan thanked the US for the offers of assistance but that they would take care of their own. I don't remember where I got that information now, so I may very easily have been misled, but that was the primary reason I didn't put together a care package as I did after Katrina and Rita.

They are getting plenty of care packages and say that they really aren`t much use (there was a lot of footage showing PILES of clothes being sorted through, all over the mountainside) apart from tents and blankets - which need money.

Money is also need to keep the few helicopters in the air, which is the only way to get to the people.

Don`t forget that these are mostly very simple people who have always lived very basically and not had many posessions. Note I said "Mostly". They really need shelter from the fast approaching winter - snow has already fallen here and there, or many more will die from the cold.

the vision thing...

i've never approached a problem that way. i've never read about caesar for instance, taken note of his traits (e.g. ruthlessness, cunning, ambition, vision, manipulation, calculation) then conclude i must internalize those characteristics to be successful.

most of the time, it starts with a vague notion or idea or solution to a problem that irritates me. then i try to narrow down the options, while taking note of constraints such as time, money, quality, personalities, politics, or the basic raw materials. i try very hard in assessing these pieces of the jigsaw puzzle as _accurately_ and _objectively_ as possible, because any errors this early can lead to gross and costly mistakes later on. the raw materials are almost infinite, in all shapes and sizes, coming at you from all directions, all the time. then, if you're lucky, a sequence or part of the puzzle falls into place in your mind. the vaguest of notions suddenly transforms from fluid water into hard ice.

you've already gone through the trade-offs, the counter-arguments, the drawbacks and determined the best way to proceed. so when someone complains about a danger you've already factored months ago a dozen times over, you get irritated they didn't do their homework, and depending on the situtation, try to neutralize or bypass them because there's no time to explain everything to everyone, nor do their homework for them. at this point, when the desired result is in the mind, perhaps one takes on the attributes of certain kinds of people, but that's a byproduct. it's not the primary goal.

there's little sense of freedom. there is, however, a never ending sense of constraint. for instance, i can't take a block of granite, proclaim it to be wood, then use wooden tools and expect a quality piece of sculpture, given x amount of time and y amount of money. there is plenty of wiggle room in the fine details here and there, but little elsewhere. i think the weaker leaders fail to accurately assess the constraints and feel they can do anything because they don't understand all of the major tradeoffs and permutations. if you care about results -- and results are the best way to gain and maintain power/influence -- and you hate self-serving bullshit to cover up your poor results, then i think it's next to impossible not to feel _perpetually_ constrained, regardless of what some 3rd person piddlywink may say about one's power or influence.
