It is now 9:00pm which is when those late polling sites are closing. And they have just shown on the news that the Republican gubernatorial candidate has just conceded--even though supposedly no one was supposed to start counting votes until right now! I wonder what the heck is going on?
These are based on "statistcal" tabulations and aren't valid until the offical count. The new media is just publishing them as valid. Unless, of course, someone conceeds early (remember Gore?).......
Meanwhile, NOBODY in the VA/MD Senate or Governor races is willing to concede. The ones with the most votes thus far claimed victory, but the potential losers won't concede until all the absentee votes are counted. It's their right, and every vote does count and all...but in one case the dude is down 150,000 votes so far! lol

In my state all the votes are counted electronically as they are slid into the machine (optical readers). Maybe your state is the same?
Same here - but I'd bet it's like here. The actual tallies aren't done until all the voting is in. It's pretty quick to get the information - but takes some time to sort it all out and report.
However - there are always exit polls.
