OT: Prayers needed

Thanks for all the prayers in September for my cousin who lost her battle with lupus. Now her oldest daughter (16) needs surgery on Thursday. On Friday doctors discovered she has a 20-pound cyst attached to a kidney. That kidney has shut down and the other is weakening. The cyst fills every available space in the girl's abdomen and is pressing on many vital organs including her heart and lungs. Because the cyst has surrounded some organs and the dead kidney will also have to be removed the surgery isn't going to be simple. She will be in the hospital for almost a week and need to stay home from school for another

4-6 weeks after that if all goes well.

To make matters worse, one of her teachers docks grades 10 points for every day a student is absent even if it is excused. She has already worked ahead in this class and gets very good grades so she is quite upset that missing this much time means she will probably fail this class unless someone can convince the (STUPID) teacher to change her policy. She also has to deal with a younger sister (who has behavior problems) who is accusing her of making the whole thing up just to get attention. The sister ran away from home over the weekend in retaliation (she spent the weekend in a shelter). Never mind that the CT scan looked like almost anyone's worst nightmare. My aunt said that after seeing that scan there was absolutely no reason to get a second surgical opinion--it was obvious that the cyst had to go before it totally destroyed something vital beyond the one kidney that is already shot.

The girl said she started to feel pain back in the spring but because of her mom's health problems and the way her sister was acting, she didn't want to say anything about it. She finally decided she needed to see a doctor because she started to have trouble catching her breath.

Lots and lots of prayers are needed for this whole family!

Any chance that someone can convince administration to transfer her to a different teacher?

Coming out of lurk here With some suggestions.

If the teacher refuses to change policy go to the school administration, especially the counselor/social worker/support staff. Most districts have provisions for students who must be on long-term absence and, whether the teacher likes it or not, she must abide by whatever the rules are. Alternately, could the child go on home-bound status while she recuperates? If so, her grade cannot be docked since home-bound students are considered to be technically present because they are still enrolled in school even though the classwork is being done elsewhere. The work and/or a grade from the home-bound teacher is turned in when the student resumes going to school and is part of he class grade. At least that's how it works where I am. It's worth asking about.

Good thoughts for her, and during her recovery.

Of course! the poor family didn't need anymore grief.

NOW - can you go talk to the high school principal about her accounting teacher? Bring a copy of the cat scan too. Sometimes teachers can be overruled.

The most positive thoughts going in their direction. One can understand exactly why she said nothing, why her sister is being a pain, it's all very overwhelming.

Whoops! Thanks for catching that. I actually had another problem that led to my having to change the date and time, but I obviously did it incorrectly!

This sort of problem is usually the sort of thing that responds to noise. Perhaps someone in the family can take on the challenge. Go to the teacher and explain first. If that doesn't work, go to the principal. If the principal won't insist on the teacher changing the policy, tell the principal you're going to the school board and the media. That ought to do the trick. One might find out whether the school system offers short term disability insurance and medical leave and draw a contrast between benefits offered to teachers and those offered to students ;-)

Best wishes, Ericka
