The winter that sticks in my mind is not for lots of snow, but for lots of ice storms. It was in the early 90s - 1992? And for a whole month and a half, there were ice storms every couple of days, and no melting on the in-between days. It was awful. I think the kids missed 16 days of school in a five-week period.

I remember the UPS man making a delivery, and he couldn't walk down my front path, which had an inch of ice, and I couldn't walk to his truck....so he *slid* the box right down the path. After that, we did something similar with groceries...DH went shopping, and it was too slick to walk back and forth to the car carrying them in. So we rigged up a plastic sled or box on a rope, gave it a big push from the stoop, and he put a grocery bag into at the curb and pushed it back toward the house.

The state legislature refused to back down on the 180-days rule (certainly the kids couldn't learn as much in 178 days, could they?) and in order to not be attending school until the last week of June, they jiggled the schedule so the kids could go an extra 25 minutes a day for some period of time. It was just enough to throw off everyone's schedules, and you just *know* that 25 min. more per day for some limited period was of no real use to teachers in terms of curriculum content. What a lot of hassle for just fulfilling the letter of the law.

We were lucky down here - saved by the Atlantic and only had minor damage but Quebec and parts of Ontario suffered badly. Even though I dislike the snow, the ice is harder to handle and more treacherous.

Oh - well, maybe it is her strange neighbor? Or her DH?

What a clever idea.... I live on top of a hill and some days I can't get the truck up the hill. A sled for the groceries would be a great idea. Maybe DD gets a new sled for Christmas

Ah well - government and committees can be like that.

The HS marching band is headed to China for the Olympics - every snow day is being scrutinized so the band can leave in time... Though more likely, the band will get early finals.

I hope I'm not looking at one like that....

Yes, the snow Cheryl talked about yesterday, is coming down here and looks good to go for the rest of the day, no bridge game tonight for me I guess. Oh well, a second glass of wine in compensation lol

I remember that one. We were living in Columbia, MD, then, and the snow plows at the condos piled all the snow on the parked cars. Then came the freeze and the ice-storms. If I remember right neither of us could get the cars out for three days, and it took a lot for us to miss work. We had just the one dachshund then, and Whisky would walk on top of the frozen snow, dragging his undergear on the ground. he did NOT want to go outside for a few days!
