On and OT: arrived in Florida safe and sound

Had a great trip south. Day one was rainy until about 3pm. Day two, we drove along the Blue Ridge Parkway for a couple of hours, back to the interstate, and more Parkway further west. It was a clear sunny day, views were awesome, as most of the leaves were off the trees. Made it to MaryJo's in Gastonia by dinnertime. Picked up some black and white prints for a block exchange with my guild in Kingston, and also bought the background and mottled black fabric for a quilt project (I'll pick up the colours gradually, as I have lots of projects to work on already!) Day three, we debated stopping in Charleston and touring a plantation, but decided to leave it until spring, as the gardens will probably be prettier. Also, as we get closer to our southern home, we get anxious to see how it has fared without us over the summer. Our place is great, everything working so far. DH is cleaning the screen room this morning, as well as the sunroom side of the house (my sewing room!) Then we need to clean the windows in the sunroom, get some of the garden railway stuff out into the garden, and I can move my machine from the dining room table! We've done the first grocery trip, and have an on-going list on the refrigerator. I think we'll be shopping daily for a while...... I may even get a sewing machine set up this afternoon!

So glad you had such an enjoyable trip. Sounds like you are settling in just fine. So what are the temperatures like where you are?

Highs in the 90's when we arrived, and very humid. It has cooled off a bit today and is overcast. DH went golfing this morning with a neighbour and I'm baking bread and puppy sitting for our next-door neighbours.

While we don't have the cold weather a lot of the country gets, I still prefer the warmer temperatures. However, your humidity would probably kill me! ;-) I like 90 with about 8% humidity.

Howdy!

I'm sure it was nice up there, in March, altho' all we saw was the swirling curtain of fog. I took it for about an hour, then told Gene, "I need to get off here; there's an exit right there," about the time he noticed my white knuckles gripping the armrest. Down in the valleys it was gorgeous, looking at the underside of the fog. Thank goodness we went to the Quilt Shop in Asheville first; I had a bundle of fabric to hug - you know that always calms me down. We're going back; the Blue Ridge Pkwy is addictive.

Welcome back, Susan T. Bienvenidos a Florida!

Just an FYI -- sometimes parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway are closed depending on weather. Twice, I have been coming back from Asheville heading south towards home and the Parkway was closed. Once was in March when I had my DSis with me and I really wanted her to see the beautiful mountains. Also, for those who are not too familiar, the Parkway is CLOSED to commercial traffic!! NO big 18 wheelers to have to drive behind. Of course, with it being a pretty twisty, turny two lane road, no trucker in his right mind would want to drive it :-). Opposite side of the coin is getting behind someone who wants to drive 20 miles an hour the whole time and there's NO passing anywhere along the road and there is no rest room in sight....... well, you get my drift :-). Back in 1996 my dad took the train from Reno to Philadelphia, to visit with my mother's sister and get some family secrets "aired out". He then drove down to Virginia to see my brother. He sent me a picture or two of the Smoky Mountains, knowing I would really enjoy that.

They have been on my bucket list since then, to go see for myself.

I have never been on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but, I have been on Skyline Drive in Virginia. The speed limit is 35 mph, there are places to pull over and get out of your car. There are hiking trails w/parking and restrooms, there are/is an area to buy food or picnic. It is beautiful, I've never felt that I was going to fall, and I am afraid of heights. There have been times when all we saw was the top of clouds/fog, and times that we saw deer every where, even saw a bear one day. Never, never drive up there to see the fall leaf colors, it is bumper to bumper traffic, with people who only drive once a year!

8~( Truth! Does not make my "driver" happy, of course his passenger insists on reading the mile markers. "Mile marker one, mile marker two..." and on, and on ... Bonnie, in Middletown, VA, who has posted to her webshots a new quilt but doesn't know how to get back there!

Go! Go-go-go! It's beautiful, lovely, spectacular, haunting, gripping scenery; it catches your heart and stays with you. And did I mention the quilt shop(s) along the way?

Wow, you mean that Virginia didn't close the restrooms there? Or are they private businesses with restrooms?. We only drive on I-81 as far as Harrisonburg to visit our son now. The past couple of years we'd been traveling to battlefields and other historical sites in Virginia, but we don't feel like it anymore. We've been spending time and money in West Virginia, Maryland, and our home state of PA, instead. Virginia used to be for lovers, now it's for people with large bladders who don't need to stretch their legs once in a while!

Skyline Drive is a national park,VA can't close it down. It is closed when there is snow and ice, to dangerous up there. PA is my home state too! VA has closed the rest areas on most of the highways, out of money. Maybe the new governor will change that, he plans to sell the state liqueur stores and use the money on highways. Brilliant, NOT!

Did you know that there is a great quilt shop a few miles south of Harrisonburg on Rt. 42, at Dayton next to the Dayton Farmers Market (only open on Thu., Fri., Sat. most of the year). the shop is Patchwork Plus on Kildeer Lane. They are dealers for Bernina and Janome.

Thanks for the info on the quilt shop! I will check it out. I have visited the quilt museum in Harrisonburg, which was interesting.

I agree that selling the liquor stores is a bad idea. That idea has been floating around PA lately too. The liquor stores make money for the taxpayers and control underage drinking (IMO) better than a for-profit operation would, so, as a taxpayer, I'd like to keep them!.

I recently read that states along the I-81 corridor have received stimulous money to update the railroads running along I-81, with the intention of transferring as much freight as possible off I-81 and onto the rails. This can't happen too soon for me. The numerous large trucks terrify me, and they cause the worst accidents, where the highway is closed down for hours.

I'd love passenger rail too, but I guess that's a pipe dream!

Gosh, govt. liquor stores are a pretty weird idea for a native Californian. We make lots of money on taxing liquor and it can't be too easy to for minors to buy liquor since they still make 'beer runs' at the grocery (they have to steal it and usually get caught) Also from what I hear there is no shortage of youngsters hitting on their parents home liquor stash. Less govt. involvement is change I would like to see myself. Just my opinion though. Taria

As always, we must agree to differ on some points, including this one!

I would rather see all liquor profits (not just taxes) going to taxpayers, rather than to wealthy businessmen.

Of course you must also factor in that I worked for the government for 34 years and am now on pension, so I don't have the same negative opinion of government agencies that some do. I have far more fear of corporations. Corporations are "them." The government is "us" or at least it should be. If it isn't "us" we need to kick the bums out, and I still have hopes that we did that last year. I have hopes that hardworking people will be able to get affordable healthcare. For my part, I have excellent healthcare, and I am perfectly willing to be taxed on it, if it means my self-employed relatives and others don't have to go without.

I worked with many efficient, dedicated people, and a few who weren't. Just like in private industry (based on what friends tell me). And contrary to what you might think, we usually managed to get rid of the ones who weren't good employees. It can be done. I was, and am, proud to have been a public employee.
