Hi Guys, Last evening, DH and I watched a performance of SOUTH PACIFIC shown on PBS -- I think it was a Great Performances show. Anyway, it was live and was wonderful but a bit different than most musicals you usually see. The main characters had "play books" they used with their lines and they didn't wear costumes. Anyway, it was really a great show but had only a few people I recognized. Reba MacIntire (sp?) play Nurse Nellie and Alec Baldwin play Luther Billis. I can see Reba but was astounded that Baldwin would do something like. He WAS absolutely hilarious as Luther though, especially in the Christmas show when they did "Honey Bun". Imagine chunky Alec Baldwin in a tank t-shirt and loose cotton knickers (almost to the knees), a coconut bra (made from size "Z" cup coconuts), a grass skirt to the knees and black dress shoes and socks. Absolutely side splitting to say the least. He couldn't do the belly roll thing that Ray Walston did in the movie but Alec did a passable "bump & grind" -- LOLOL! Anyway, to my question. Bloody Mary and Liat were played by black women with exquisite voices -- I recognized the Bloody Mary character but not Liat. When I first saw them, I wondered why the producers hadn't used either Asian or Pacific Island vocalists as had been done in the movie. DH and I started discussing this and we both realized that we couldn't think of *any* well known vocalists who are of Asian or Pacific Island descent except for the opera performer Kiri te Kanawa (I THINK that's how you spell her name) from New Zealand! Now, there HAS to be a bazillion excellent vocalists either from that part of the world OR of that ancestry living in the USA that the producers of the ply could have used. At least I would think there should be a bunch but I can't for the life of me think of who they might be!!! This is making me go bonkers trying to think of someone other than an opera singer who is of Asian or Pacific Island descent! LOLOL!! Help -- anyone come us with any names?? CiaoMeow >^;;^<
