I'm mulling over an idea and I need some input, please. I'm working on a waste canvas project, and I was thinking that rayon would really brighten it up, but I need to know a couple of things. One, does anyone know how well rayon thread washes - it would be on a sweatshirt - and two, will pulling it through waste canvas really chew it up? Any thoughts would be most welcome. Thanks!
Rayon, typically in garments, is a delicate washable. I sew with rayon fabric at times, and have bought things labelled dry clean - but if you wash them gently, it does okay - meaning no harsh spin cycles, and usually I hang or gentle dry. Fabric, like the thread, wants to unravel.
Rayon thread should wash okay, but I'd question the use on a sweatshirt. I use rayon on canvas projects, and if you use short lengths to stitch with - say at most 12", but having a couple of inches to waste on either end for starting and ending, and be sure the needle is big enough so the thread goes easily through the eye, and that the needle opens the hole in the canvas, then there isn't a problem with tearing up the thread from stitching. I'd look at your options for thread - there is Panache - twisted rayon from Rainbow Gallery - which I find a bit better than using Marlitt. There are also rayon ribbons like Neon Rays.
If you're looking for some thread alternatives with shine - you couuld check out the Rainbow Gallery site, and Caron as well. RG has a bunch of novelty threads, and canvas work is done all the time with a variety of them (many are too wide to be suitable for the higher count linen & aida grounds). Also, they make a "washable" metallic - specifically labelled that way, called Cresta d'Oro which comes in several colors.
I've used the size 20 Rayon from Elmore-Pisgah (Ruby Mills) for years and had no problem with it. It washes very well, waste canvas removal does not harm it, and it looks great! The size is perfect for crosstitch.
There are many types of rayon threads and the ones I have used wash well. You might want to try one of the Edmar threads, which are more like pearl cottons and come in different weights (like pearl cotton). DMC and Madeira make lovely rayon threads. As does Rainbow Gallery.
I've never used rayon with waste canvas, but knowing how well rayon holds up under adverse conditions, I can't see this as a problem.
