After this discussion I was thinking about what Elizabeth asked me when she asked why I stayed with her as a friend for so long. I started to wonder, why did I do that? Maybe I was more compassionate than I knew I was, or maybe I was so desperately lonely I cllung on to toxic people because it was the best I could do.
This life long friend was absolutely, strikingly gorgous. Tall, olive skin, beautiful shiney hair, beautiful body, got all the guys. But she got all the guys who wanted to have their way with her and there was nothing more. This happened to her often. Or, she would have affairs with married men over and over and justify them by saying their wives were okay with it because they were foreigners and expected their husbands to cheat! What???
So, looking back on it I can say clearly that there was a flaw in my own characterr which cleaved me to her and finally one day I woke up and realized it was me she needed to feel better about herself. Relationships are complicated, expecially long term.
I still have friends since I was very young. They happen to be two gay guys, so like Kathy Griffin I have my "gays." We have had enduring friendship, honest friendship and love for almost 35 years. That's friendship. They never judge me unless it's something I am about to do which would hurt me. I learn new things about myself every day.
