Again only one block finished this week

Early this week I finished "Old Maid's Puzzle". Mom was becoming more confused. On Tuesday and Wednesday she slept 20 out of 24 hours. I knew her UTI infection was probably back. Thursday the doctor told me to take her to the ER. Yes, the infection was back. They admitted her to the hospital so the antibiotic could be given through IV. She was released this morning (Saturday) feeling much better but weak from lying in a hospital bed for two days.

Of the eight blocks remaining a few are very quick so those can be finished. If a few are not finished Dave will understand. He has learned to live with my unfinished projects over the years. I have certainly finished more than I thought I would. Much of that is due to the support from this group. Knowing I had to report to you every week end kept me at the project.

I must confess that on Wednesday while Mom slept so much I played with an antique block that caught my eye instead of working on the sampler. I would look over at the big blue notebook holding the sampler and feel guilty about not working on it but just kept experimenting. The antique block is in the latest issue of American Patchwork and Quilting. Each diamond of the eight pointed star is pieced from eight triangles. Now that I know the block does go together I will probably trace triangle pieces while Mom and I sit on the patio each afternoon. It is a great pattern to use those bits and pieces.

While sitting with Mom in the hospital I stitch on Redwork Penny Squares. As a part of my "History of Quilting" lecture series I cover Redwork but always had to borrow a quilt for the example. At least ten years ago I started stitching my own set of Penny Squares. It is about time I finish that project so have several traced and ready to stitch. It is very relaxing work.

Susan,

I'm sorry your mom had to be hospitalized, but glad she is feeling much better. As for working on the antique block rather than your project, I think you can be forgiven under the circumstances. Dealing with a sick parent is exhausting and afterwards, your mind needs a vacation. Sometimes those vacations take the form of an antique block. :-)
