Am I the only one .... and a whine

Who finds the Hancocks of Paducah site quoting prices at 1/2 yd just irritating as all get out? And who also finds that she has to think and rethink how much "units" to order when needing yardage?

I swear if they weren't the only site I happened across that had solids (yes real old fashioned boring solids) I would have just up and walked away. I needed solid black. For something. But then went to the quilt store and got something that wasn't solid black that is going to work better :-) Along with a few other things I could not live without. And soon will have some strange amt of solid black from H of P. Whose prices are no way near as good as they used to be back in the day ...

OK done with the whine -- I feel better. So what if I burned my finger trying to light the grill and then found we had no aloe or anything else to put on it and then when I went out to see how the chicken was doing discovered the gas had run out and then had to fight my way thru a bunch of yellow jackets to get the chicken off the grill and am now cooking it in the oven and we are never going to have dinner tonite at this rate. I lied I wasn't done with the whine!

Thanks for listening!

I have found other sites that also quote 1/2 yard prices. It doesn't really bother me. I guess I am one of the few that has had fairly good luck with them. The longest they have ever taken to get me an order was 11 days, and that was with a holiday and a Sunday in there.

I guess I am more bothered that all of a sudden they are sending me advertisements for whatever really often. I don't mind getting them occasionally, but sometimes they come multiple times a week.

With chicken ... I'd recommend a nice white.... maybe Chardonnay! Or even a Zinfandel...

OH well... feel better soon!

Tomorrow will be a better day!

I haven't shopped at HoP for a long time.... the 1/2 yard pricing kinda bugs me too, plus, they just seem kinda expensive. If I'm looking for something specific, I usually search on quiltshops and find the best price. They have lovely fabric at HoP, but lots of other places do too!

If you will put the burned finger in a glass or cup with ice water, it will help. BTDT I had to do this for about 20 - 30 minutes. Barbara in SC

Awww...you poor thing! It just isn't you day, is it? :( I'm not really upset about HoP 1/2 yard "thing", and I love their catalog, but I rarely order from them. I'm leery because of their backorder policy.

Oh, Keepsake Quilting has the BEST solid black ever. Amish black. Trust me. It is the blackest fabric ever.

Solids are not boring. Personally I think all quilts should have at least one solid in it somewhere. Real solids, not "reads as solids". True solids let your eyes rest on them while "reads as solids" do not.

In beginner's drawing classes the teachers often say, "You cannot have dark without light, and you cannot have light without darkness." They mean you need the contrast to give the drawing more interest. I think the same sort of thing applies to prints and solids in a quilt. A quilt of all prints might be pretty, and a quilt of all solids can make a great graphic statement, but a quilt with both prints and solids is more warm and inviting and often more interesting to see. I hate the 1/2 yard pricing. I feel like someone is trying to trick me.

I recently ordered 40 plus fabrics from HoP.I'm getting older (LOL) it takes a moment to figure how much I need!!But they had the best selection without driving all over the place..

It doesn't bleed. I've use it often and keepsakes is the only place I've seen this fabric. I've been to Amish quilt/fabric stores and they do not seem to carry that black fabric. My kaleidoscope quilt is made with it and I've washed it a few times and it's still sweet.

I admit it makes more sense to have prices in 1-yard units. Marketing ploy of course -makes everything look cheaper. Haven't ordered actual fabric from HofP in ages, but AFAIK they still have the best deal on whole bolts of Hobbs. Sold by the bolt too, so no calculating. Roberta in D

They do have a strange policy. I ordered from them last year or maybe the year before. Paid the postage on the total of my order. They sent half my order and, if I recall correctly, never refunded excess shipping charge. It was mentioned on the bill that it was back ordered. Never received the fabric nor was I charged for it.

well drat it all I *knew* I should have asked here first. That's what I am looking for -- I went sightseeing in the stash and had a delightful collection of blacks that aren't ... so it will be interesting to see if the blacks I ordered from HoP turn out to add to be more of those annoying wimpy not-backs. Bah.

What is interesting to me is that when I started quilting solids were readily available and then they just flat disappeared one tone on tones appeared. I don't do a whole lot with solids but as you say sometimes they really make a huge difference. Maybe they disappeared cause there were so many solids on yucky base fabrics or cause you really do have to think about grain line ...

Well said.
