Help - I only have reverse

I just pulled out my two year old Brother XR-65 to make a new winch cover for our boat and found I only have reverse. The last time I used the machine was about 6 months ago and all was fine then. The boat lives on our boat in Puerto Vallarta where it can get very hot and damp in the summer but I keep the machine fairly well insulated and so far I don't see any rust or warp due to the weather here.

Has anybody on this group had this type of problem with this type of machine? I'm hopeful that someone can suggest an easy fix I could do myself.

is it a button or a turning knob? One of mine does that, I just turn the knob and it usually pops back.

Hope you can fix it!

When was the last time it was serviced? Dampness is the sewing machine's worst enemy and salt air is especially corrosive. Both stainless and alloy components oxidise in salt-air. Aluminium in particular is short lived, and turns to powder.=20

Take a look at one sewing machine with a bad case of it:

It's a lever and no amount of punching it makes any difference. At this point I'm preparing to tear the machine apart myself tomorrow and see if I can free what ever it is that's stuck.

Wish me luck!

G'day Barb

I had this happen to a basic machine that I bought secondhand earlier this year. It hadn't been cleaned or serviced for so long that the grease had gone black and hardened, so I took all the covers off the machine and proceeded to clean off all the gunk-grease with an old toothbrush and turps. Naturally I put a piece of cloth to soak the excess but when I put the machine back together found I only had reverse, so I had to remove the covers again. In doing so, I found the reverse bar with a hook at both ends, had dropped out of where it should be located and once I hooked this back into the eyes at either end, all was OK.

Hope this helps? Maybe the grease in your machine has gone hard as it was in this one that I bought?

Thanks for the info Bronwyn. I'll keep a lookout for gunky grease and hooks that might not be in their proper place. In fact, it could very well be that the hooks came loose when we came back up to Puerto Vallarta from Zihuatanejo last season. It was a VERY lumpy sail and I haven't used the machine since then.

Barb........I can't think of the site I checked, and didn't bookmark it either, but you might find it by doing a google search. From memory I searched 'how a sewing machine works' or something like that. I had never taken the covers off a sewing machine previously and wasn't sure what to expect.

The reverse bar in my Janome was along the front at the bottom and it was approx 130-140mm (5 inches) long.

Since I've had those covers off that machine I'll continue to do the servicing, but the embroidery machines will go to someone who is qualified.
