Can't live without

Red Alert! well, near neighbors of red. I just found that I was running out of a fabric I can not live without. It can be depended on to add some warmth and sunshine to anything. This favorite of mine is the orange / yellow marble by South Seas. I just found some at

reduced to $6 per yard. Another that I think I have to have in the stash is Michael Miller's white that has a sparkle of silver about it - it's a member of the Fairy Frost collection. Inquiring quilter minds want to know. What precious fabric do you want to always have in your stash? Polly

Didn't you and I agree that we didn't like orange years ago. (giggle)

Must have been that particular color of orange or was it pumpkin.

Funnny that you and I both are doing quilts with just the colors we said we didn't like. I know what changed my mind. My hug quilt. I saw those colors and shades in a different light or should I say the eyes of other quilters.

There isn't a day goes by I don't fondle that quilt. I'm still working on my Flaming Peace Rose applique quilt.

Yes, Kate. You got me. Neither of us knew about orange. Both of us are blessed with Hugs post Katrina that we snuggle every day and each has their warmth of orange. Truth be told, when my sister asked for a quilt of blue and orange (Florida folks, you know) I kind of got overdosed with orange. Her quilt requires that the curtains be drawn and the lights turned off. It is mighty loud. The 'late summer flowers' orange isn't quite as rowdy as the ones you and I cringed over at Ponchatrain. It's a very gentle sort of presence. You never got to see our Hug. If you're going to be able to go to the Pensacola Quilt show I'll bring it so you can see what a gator hug is like. How we do cherish it. Oh my. Yes. Bring your flaming peace rose. Meanwhile . .. back to the subject. Is there a special fabric that you enjoy always having on hand? Polly

I can really only answer with fabric lines - couldn't be specific to colour within them! I *need* (and wouldn't need any others really) Fossil Ferns, Moda Marbles and Makower Spraytime. There are other fabrics that I love or really like (eg Fusions); but if I could only have what I *have* to have it would be those first three. . In message , Polly Esther writes

I like to add cherry red to just about anything that needs a zing. I also am rather fond of a light grey Moda marble. It works well in applique for snow, etc where bright white would just look boring. Plus, having lived in Alaska, I know that snow often looks more "dirty" or "stomped around in" than a pristine field of blank white anyway. I suggest a light grey marble. It is very useful!

Well yes there is, teal, not the deep dark green of my van, but the lighter shades.

I was at Hancock Fabrics and fell in love with a light weight flannel and of all colors, pink.

And last but not least brown, the fabric looks more like batik, with swirls of light brown like a cup of coffee with cream just before you stir it.

Come to think of it, I've made a couple baby quilts with teal, pink and brown. H-u-m-m-m.

The fabric I can't live without is one I'm currently out of. It's a Maywood, mostly black, but with some slight colored wisps in red, rust, and periwinkle blue. If I could find it online, I could order more and show it to you. As it is, I look for good blacks. I make do with Kona solid, but I'm always on the lookout for blacks that are dark, not lightened up with charcoal, and not solid.

Oh Karen, Thank you for the web site. I found the print I've been looking for for years, Its the Hoffman Sunflower that they are bringing back. Oh My-y-y it is so pretty.

Went to the Hoffman web site. Have you seen the 1895 fabrics.

They have a red, barn red and flame. MADE MY EYES HURT. These reds are WOW!!!!

If I owned a LQS with Hoffman bali fabrics, I would never open the doors. I wouldn't be able to sell any of it. They are just beautiful this year. Ladies you better go look, these fabrics won't last long in any LQS.

Red. I seem to add a bit of red to many quilts. If not a 'true' red, I include a variation. Sometimes it is light as a raspberry, sometimes as dark as a burgundy .... but I nearly always include red. PAT in VA/USA

I love polkadots and stripes. A small white random dot on black, and small black and off white/white stripe is something that perks up almost anything for me. I tend to use them in lieu of solids when I can. I wish I could find a good white or WoW...most seem too sheer or plast-icky.

Lately, it seems like I need and want reds and purples. With the quilts I do for Pine Ridge Reservation, I make them very bright and happy. I usually have enough kids bright prints. It always seems like I don't have enough red and purple solids/prints that are bright and right now, I have nothing. With Hancocks gone, Jo-Ann's never really having anything and being low on funds, I try to find something else I may have here. But, it still isn't the same as using those bright purple and red solids/prints.

I love having good black on black fabric. And, hard as they can be to use, I just love my big, bold prints. Call me a novelty girl.

One was called 'Black Tonal Asian Harmonies by Lonni Rossi'. Black, but not solid? If you find your fabric, please post. It sounds yummy.

Oh my. That's quite a fabric store. Ever the last to find out about anything new in the technology world, I'm relatively new to online fabric shopping. I mean, I've done it before, but I've never been a regular. With Fiber on a Whim, I may have to become an addict.

What do I mean by black but not solid? How to explain. I guess I'm thinking of the darkest possible colors that aren't pure black. With lights, there's white, white on white, and then lightest pastels, like white with bits of cream, pale pink and pale blue. That's for analogy. I'm looking for darks that are such deep purples and greens that they're almost black, or for blacks with only bits dark colors mixed in.

But that black tonal Asian harmony might be what I'm looking for. Basically I have some dazzling blocks. It was time to do something with my 2" square collection so I sewed all the purples together into a 15" block. That looked good, so I did another one with all different blues. The next thing I knew, I had 9: red, blue, yellow, purple, green, orange, reddish-purple, turquoise-teal, and yellowy-orange. Now I need something dazzling to do with them, and just sewing them together wouldn't show them off well enough. My whole guild decided they needed a black background, so I've been shopping for the right black. I was set to buy Kona solid black at the local store when they were having a big sale, but they were out. I think that Asian harmony might be just the thing.
