making magic

Just thought I'd share with you tonight's magic. The crib quilt underway is appliquéd horses. There's a black horse (with polka dots, naturally), a brown horse (with fuzzy fat bees), and a white horse (this one is Michael Miller's fairy frost sparkling snow). Of course, the quilt needed a painted pony and I had some white with wobbly black spots, I think it's really cow, and there had to be a floral one from a merry-go-round. I tried for hours to find the 'just right' background. Blue calico was boring. Stripes too much. Dark green lost the black horse and so did purple. Yellow lost the brown one. Lime? not this time. After lots of auditions, I tried a soft red that's sort of tie-dyed. Oh my. Wow. That's magic. It lets every horse show off and still has life of its own. If you don't have a design wall, find a way. We've discussed them recently and there are all sorts of solutions from flannel table cloth tossed over a door to some serious installations. I wish you could see the magic on mine. Polly

sounds absolutely wonderful!!! I've been working the other way this evening. I had the fabrics (4) and couldn't decide on a pattern. I didn't want to buy any more but everything I looked at called for 5 or 6 fabrics. Finally settled on a star block that I think will be perfect. I hope to start on it this weekend.

I wish I could see it too! Doesn't the sparkly white horse want to be a unicorn? Maybe when you quilt it, give him an imaginary horn. So red's your new neutral? If we can't talk you into a digital camera, won't somebody who lives in the neighborhood please go over and photograph Miss Polly's oevre? Roberta in D

I'm eagerly waiting to see more hummingbirds from you, Mary. Please do one with a bright red collar for Mississippi and I think our Seattle friends have some that are wearing yellow. Polly

you're right - it sounds like magic. How rewarding it always is to see a design come together like that.

Sunny, after a while, I truly began to feel like an octopus. I'd gripped the challenge and just be hanged if I'd let go. For a long time, it seemed that nothing was going to work. And yes, me too. I love it when it all comes together. Polly

"Sunny" Thanks Polly, you have inspired me. I love when that happens.

Yes, indeed. The sparkly white horse wants to be a unicorn. Furthermore, the spotted one is insisting that he belongs to John Wayne. Do be careful what you wish for, Roberta. One day I'm going to learn cameras and absolutely overwhelm you doing Show and Tell. One day. Polly

Finally, they are making digital cameras for pre-schoolers. Now I just need a patient 4 year-old to come teach me. The 4 year-old is not very patient, you know. Polly

Well good grief, it's pretty much point and shoot! You can click all you want, because it doesn't waste actual film, and just delete anything that doesn't work. Even I can take pictures with a digital, and that's saying something! All you need is for your regular computer guru to hook up whatever system will download photos from the camera. With mine, it simply involves inserting the little memory stick into a slot and running the download program. They all get filed automatically into folders sorted by month and year, from which you can rename them and move them anywhere you see fit. Please please please, we want to see! Roberta in D

Well, we wish we could see the magic too, Polly. But until you get and MASTER a simple digital camera, we have to assume you are making it all up.

And that you just have a very vibrant imagination.

Roberta, I am sorry to say that your simple little description is just way beyond me!

More than likely it comes from the fact I really am not interested in camers, having one, using one, or posting pics....
