Canadian shop hop

Hi everyone.

Fall is certainly in full swing now. The leaves are gone, the fields are brown (tan??) we've had several mornings of having to scrape the frost off the windshield and the winds have a bit of bite to them. Makes one think of quilting, huh? :)

Well, we had an opportunity to make a whirl-wind trip thru Saskatchewan to visit our 8 kids and 11 1/3 grandbabies that live over there.

The quilty part is - that before leaving I discovered that Trend Tex - one of the fabric distributors here in Canada - was hosting a Canadian National Shop Hop. You need to visit 10 of the participating stores to qualify for their grand prize. My DH is such a sweet guy, he didn't even complain about having to stop in towns we wouldn't normally stop in and hunt for the quilt shop. We managed 6 shops that are participating in this shop hop. I have till Dec 31 to complete the 10 shops and there are 3 in Calgary and 1 in Red Deer, both only an hour away. I've never done a live shop hop before. It was fun checking out all these shops. 4 of them I'd never been in before.

Shopping with DH I also spent more money than I would going by myself. Where I would drool over something then put it back, he says "why not get it while your here??". He also spotted 3 different flannels that we had to buy some of. 2 of them are cute, small child, wild animal prints. The other has wolf heads with very little to no background. Also, as part of the shop hop you can collect points for purchasing bonus items or Trend-tex or Thimbleberries fabric. I decided that I would purchase 1 metre of fabric from the selected bonus fabrics from each store. Don't quite know yet what they will become, but I'll have 10 metres to work with :).

So it was a pretty great trip for me. I got to hold the newest granddaughter, Cadence. And I got to see 3 of the one years olds walk that hadn't been walking yet when I saw them last time, went shopping in 6 quilt shops, and came home with a bag full of fabric. Oh, and a book that DH figured should be added to my book stash. French Braid Quilts by Jane Hardy Miller. DH was quite impressed by a couple of the sample quilts that the shop had in their store. I really liked a table runner that someone had done from the basic pattern.

Off to put some fabric in the washer.

I love the book French Braid - good choice. I have made 6 table runners and each looked different although the braid fabrics were the same. Change the middle square, put different borders, change from light to dark, dark to light. Voila! The hardest is working on the values - take your time with that. Keep your fabrics out and just keep playing with them - subtracting and adding fabrics as you need. It is a great teaching tool.

So great to have a husband that will go with you to a fabric store - mine stays outside with a book (he always has a book or magazine handy for quilt stores on trips.
