canadian trip?

My DH is currently doing some work for the British Army and there is a possibility that later in the year he will be flying out to Canada for a couple of weeks. He is very vague about the exact location, but it's somewhere near Calgary (well, Calgary is the nearest large airport) and where the British Army does their winter training for the troops.

If this rings any bells with Canadian readers I'd appreciate recommendations of quilt stores close by!!

Hi Morag I live about an hour north of Calgary. Are you coming out with DH? If so, and you have time I'd love to do a meet up. Meanwhile, Calgary has at least a half dozen quilt shops. I'm assuming that your DH will be headed for Suffield which is East of Calgary. On the way there is a small town called Strathmore, which has an excellant quilt shop. East of Suffield, is Medicine Hat and the last time I got to spend time there, they had a couple of nice quilt shops. There may be something in Brooks also. Your DH would have to pass through both Strathmore and Brooks to get to Suffield. Now, if he is going to be in the mountains, I know that the British Army does some training in Kananaskis Country, which is west of Calgary. If he got to spend time in Canmore, there is a great quilt shop there. Banff is a tourist shopping mecca, but I'm not sure if there is a quilt shop there. Lots of pricey, unique gift ideas though. I'm away from home just now, but when I get back I can dig up names and addresses of the shops for you.

Marilyn currently in Saskatchewan, Canada returning to Alberta later today.

Having done a bit more digging, it appears that the base is in Suffield, Alberta. He will be looking at supply methods and things so I doubt he'll be going anywhere else than the main base. According to my online map it's about 25 miles northwest of Medicine Hat.

Unfortunately I won't be coming over, we have two small children and the very thought of a transatlantic flight with a 4 year old and 20 month old brings me out in a rash. If it's anything like any of his other business trips he won't have a lot of time for leisure anyway.

Thanks for the tips, I'll start googling for shops in Medicine Hat.

Gee, I was gonna say Medicine Hat but you beat me to it LOL I know where he is going to be then :) Not that it helps any since I haven't lived in Calgary area for many years now. I do however know there is a darling little quilt shop in Cochrane, just out of Calgary.

For the quilting stores in Calgary, the ones that I love to hit happen to be Freckles, which is in the north west part of the city, then there is the Fabric cottage, also in the North west part of the city, A sewing sensation, the sewing room, there are a few more, but I have yet to hit them, and to think I have lived in this city my whole life, gasp can someone actually not hit a fabric store in the same city they live in ?
