Canceled my subscription to QNM

I don't get it any longer either. They kept telling me that I "owed' them and I never resubscribed. Finally wrote them a letter (after NUMEROUS phone calls promising it would be taken care of)stating a copy had been sent to my lawyer(under the lawyers advice). 5 MONTHS later I received a reply stating that I no longer would be getting their magazine----funny, I hadn't been getting it anyway. I won't be resubsribing to Quiltmaker or McCall'seither---and THEY can't understand "take me OFF your list please" either......I'm still getting letters to resubscribe--and they can't understand WHY I don't want to.....duh.

You've got a point there. I've never subscribed to patterns-only mags cuz if I want patterns, I'll buy a book. So far I don't mind their patterns but sheesh--the new visual format of this last issue will take some getting used to---or not.

I received one of those "free" one month trial offers from them, and took them up on it. I had not looked at one of their magazines in a few years. I received a bill first before I ever received an issue. I wrote CANCEL on the bill, and sent it back to them. They did send me 2 issues, but I did not care for the magazine. My two favorites are Quiltmaker & Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting. I also take American Patchwork & Quilting. I might not renew that one next time.

the australian P and Q is a great mag, sure costs more to usa but still cheaper to you then it is to get here in nz even, lol. has some good pattern sheets at back and lots of other info inside. buy one to see if you like it or not. nayy, jeanne

I never like their magazine and cancelled my subscription years ago. I've cancelled all my quilt magazines except Fons & Porter. I may not renew after this subscription ends. There are just too many free patterns on line and I'm saving my money for pay for our new 12 feet wide by 50 foot long house add on. We think DGD will be coming to live with us 24/7!! Her bedroom will be my present bedroom and I will get the new addition as a sewing room.

I dislike the new format too.

Here's another magazine question. Some magazines have patterns made by designers for particular fabric companies and the pattern showcases a line of fabric. Does this bother you as just more advertising or do you like it or do you not even notice?

It doesn't bother me so much in magazines really...I hate it in books though.

I bought that "still stripping" book - ALL of the patterns showcase her fabric....it just "feels" like a ploy to get you to buy the fabric too...If they were free patterns it wouldn't bug me so much (using free patterns to sell fab) but the fact that the book was twenty something dollars....ahh well

LOL - Jeanne if you ever want it let me know. Oh and if you ever need back issues.....I'm expecting a "delivery" from my mum sometime in the next month or so. I NEVER buy it, just wait for her copies!!

QNM started having format and conent "problems" after they changed hands a few years ago. But for subscription management hassles I don't think anyone can come close to McCall's!!!!!! They're awful.

And yes - some of us did want more patterns. But not ALL patterns.

For some of us the magazines are the only affordable source of patterns. Books out here in Oz cost the earth and then some! Some of mine are worth over $60. It is actually cheaper to buy books from the States and pay postage. Sad not to be able to support the local shops but I can't afford it!

My current QNM sub will be my last, Ditto McCall's - their subscription management is awful. I have started buying the British/European magazines, but subscriptions are too high. I buy off the stands when they have something I want. And Jeanne's local - New Zealand Quilter - is not bad too! Guess it all depends on what you are after.

I will keep QNM and AP&Q. I have the former back to issue #75 or so, and I have a complete run of the latter.

I am, however, going to drop Threads. Wonderful ideas but none that I am going to make. Also, for all their articles about fitting they persist in using professional models to show the clothes.

Nann with a suggestion to quilters in Oz, NZ, etc.: seek back issues from online sellers such as Quilting Traders Newsletter and Quilters Flea Market (both Yahoo groups). At $1 US per issue plus shipping you can get a whole bunch of issues and ideas for a lot less than the newsstand or subscription price. Very often the magazines are only one or two years old. Yes, that is a shameless plug! I sell quilt books and magazines on both of those lists.

I never buy t-shirts that advertise. If they want me to wear their billboards then give me the shirt.

My feelings are the same on that. I also take the license plate frame with the dealers name off my car too. If you want me to advertise, then send a check. :-)

maybe but it is what keeps the price down on the magazine. A quilt that has a fabric line is often sponsored and the magazine usually doesn't pay the designer for a sponsored quilt. ( at least not here in Europe)

Call me strange, but i like the ads often as much as the articles in quilting magazines. Love seeing new stuff!

I subscribe to most all of the quilting magazines. Guess I just like getting and reading mail, as I seldom make anything from the patterns.

Well then you can call me strange too! I like the ads and the articles about quilts and quilters better than patterns in the magazines. My small group is always amazed when I can recite what kind of quilting nationally known so and so does, etc. It's because I read all the articles about the national shows, who wins, who got a recognition award, etc. I can think of only two quilts I've made from magazine patterns. And that's over 25 years of magazines, but I wouldn't give them up. I get QNM, QuiltArt, American Patchwork and Quilting and Fons and Porter's magazine.
