color specific swaps

Hello, I was wondering if you folks ever do color specific sawps? I have a friend of mine who would love to make a quilt for herself in pink, but for her to buy all that different pink stuff would not be possible for her at this time. I was thinking as a gift to her I would maybe host, or join one of these, but I have no idea if this type of swap is ever done. If so... what would be swapped? Fat quarters? 1/2 yards? 12 in squares? I have seen styles of fabric swapped such as halloween or dots or what have you but not a color...

Carissa (who is posting a lot cause I have so much homework to aviod lol)

You would design the swap -- if you were to host it. My gut reaction would be that to swap fat quarters would be difficult -- as it would be very expensive to trade more than

1 or 2... and then there is the postage...

I would suggest that you set up a centralized swap where you swap squares... maybe 8 1/2 " squares (you can get 20 easily out of one yard of fabric. So for each person to participate they need only purchase one yard of fabric -- .

That way you would get a wide variety of fabrics.... and I would think you might get a few takers! With 20 squares to the yard... I would set your goal as 20 total swappers (that is how I did my candy jar swap - it worked out quite well). Actually -- I had fewer than 20 individuals -- because a couple of people wanted to send two packets -- which was fine -- it is just that they had to use 2 different fabrics....

Post if you have questions....

Good Luck -- sounds like fun!

Thank you for the tips :) I appreciate the input. I thinking that too collect all the different pinks nessessary it would be terrible task, thats why swap came to mind. Of course I am too busy avoiding ,my homework to organize it now, so it would be awhile from now, but as I get closer to plan to help out my friend I am sure I will come up with more questions. I used to run a soapmaking list and I hosted several swaps on their so I am not a swap newbie, but a quilt swap newbie I am lol. My friend has just been way too supportive of me while I suffer through school and I thought this would be a nice way to thank her :)

Back in the late 90s and very early 2000s we used to have a monthly nine-patch swap -- if I remember correctly, the colors varied monthly. I know I used the squares I got to make a Hug for a young mother in my new neighborhood who had been near death as a result of a ruptured appendix.

It was a fun swap but I can't remember exactly how it worked.

I guess to you regular swappers this is going to seem like a dumb question, would it be just a block of material or a quilt block? I want to participate in things but I wouldn't dare send anything that I made at this point. I know I read the topic that you shouldn't be ashamed, I just know that I can do better.

Howdy!

6 1/2" squares work great; leftovers can be dispersed via the Baseball Swap. (There's method and madness to this method of madness.) And there's a handy little 6 1/2" square ruler that makes cutting so easy...mostly.

Ragmop/Sandy --just found ..er.. re-located the yellow squares from KathyA's Yellow Swap... was that last year? at least I didn't lose them

Nothing like the pressure of sending something away to inspire perfection lol. You should see how many squares I got out of the birthday swap I did (meaning the extras I made cause they werent very good lol) Its for my crooked quilt... see I meant to do it that way. Anyhow, from what I have noticed, the swaps all seem to specify what they are for. For example the candy jar swap specified squares of fabric, but the halloween swap specified quilt blocks. And there was a star swap reently too which specified star quilt blocks. But I am always nervous too, because I am pretty new to quilting. But then I figured I could learn so much too from the people I swapped with. Thats what it was like on the soapmaking anyhow. Not everyone was a professional expert, but everyone was welcome that did their best (ie not some horrible separated end piece that was destined for the trash before the swap was started). I have only joined a couple of swaps on here, but they do seem similar. I did notice one that specified that it was for expereinced quilters. We should get togther and host a newbie swap :):) That way we can swap without fear :)

Carissa, I would probably be ashamed to do that one too. I am working on my first quilt top and it is a small one and is just 4 squares in a block and I didn't even cut the fabric. I should have already had this to the stage of just doing the border and the sandwich and quilting but life sometimes gets in the way, but hey I would rather have it that way because if there isn't life there is only one other way to go.

But honestly I think that is a good idea, now wonder how many newbies there are?

Yep, I remember that! It was fun :-) It was the MME (monthly monochromatic exchange) 9 patch exchange. Each month we were each put into groups of about

12 people and given a list of everyone's addresses. We were supposed to send a 9 patch block made with a solid fabric and a print fabrics of that month's color to each person in their group. We could join more than one group if we wanted. Each month the color of the blocks we were supposed to make would change. I saved my blocks over several months and ended up with a large stack of them. I used some of them in various projects, but I still have a stack of them left. There also used to be a monthly FQ exchange. Each month was a different color. I didn't participate in that one so I don't know how it worked.

I've hosted swaps like this. I usually do 10" squares, but FEs are also a good size. As Raggs mentioned, 6.5" squares are often popular, but it would depend on the pattern you friend was using - how many pieces she can get from a particular size of pink.

If you are interested, I'd be happy to pass along my tips for hosting a swap - it's really fun! I'm dashing out the door now, but email me at froodbuffy at griffinsflight dot com and I can pass on some info.

We've had several. I hosted one last year of yellow 6.5" squares, and I participated in a swap of black 6" strips.

Probably the best way to get a pink swap going is to start one yourself. It's fun!
