Y'all are welcome!

I'll enjoy doing this. I used to do the website for our quilting guild. I missed making websites. Developed an HTML class for adults way back in the early 1990's when the Internet was first becoming popular. Took a couple of online classes through the school district last year about making webpages so I could review my early skills. Also taught my middle school computer lab students how to make their own webpages. My best work is at

Being you already have the page on geocities which has ads in itself, I see no reason to do it. I have been considering making just a page of good quilt stores, for my own personal use, so if you won't do it I will if the urls are sent to my address, remove nospam to reply.

That is considering if they are good stores.

Please note that Helen Howe's sites are on the page.

I didn't think about putting "good quilt shops" on the list. The question was more of putting the links of RCTQ members own commercial shops. Are you suggesting a list of favorite online shops? Shops that might or might not be owned by RCTQ members?

What do you think, folks? Add a list of "good quilt shops"? What if some people had good experiences with a shop and other people had bad experiences? Would we have some sort of rating system? How do we determine what a "good quilt shop" is?

Yes, Yahoo has a frame where it advertises. The little frame on the right side of the page can be turned off. That's just part of Yahoo's way of keeping the Geocities sites free. I don't think anyone would believe that RCTQ is recommending what Yahoo has in its advertising frame.

Does the Yahoo advertising frame on the Geocities violate the RCTQ and Newsgroup rules? So should we shut down the site? Actually I think that would be an over-reaction.

Sure would be nice if someone would donate ad-free space. The only problem with that is -- what happens if the person disappears from RCTQ or no longer finds it feasible to keep the site free. Or gets in a snit and takes away the space. (We had that problem in my quilting guild.) I can give the Geocities password to a couple of people here. If something happens to me, RCTQ still has access, the address stays the same, and the site remains free.

I hadn't really noticed the adverts (- not like those horrid flashy things that Webshots has started doing). No problem with having them though - it isn't like a stranger trying to sell us his new range of saucepans, or, worst of all, someone pretending to be a Group member and saying "I just found this wonderful site" which turns out to be their own commercial one.

I think that adding shops might be completely impractical - just far too many of them. I keep a list for myself of shops that people have recommended for international mail order, and even that is getting too big. Also they keep opening/moving/closing so it is probably easier for people to ask the Group when they want to know where shops in an area are.

Thank you for doing this - I think the idea of one or two people having the password for security is a good one (especially if you have a memory like mine!!

I know what you mean about those flashy ads. I read the Reno Gazette-Journal online each morning. They have flashy noisy ads that sound just like the casino's TV ads. But that won't get me back to buying the print copy of the paper.

Good point about trying to keep the links current in a list of shops.

I really need to find a little graphic that says "new" or "updated" that I can put next to the photo links when people let us know that they have new additions. I promise not to have it flash!

Kay, I think you are doing a fine job, and yes I agree with you about what if someone gets upset, etc., I have had it happen also, but just the same we have to trust one another and I do believe we can do that. Personally if I got in a snit over something I would turn the site over to someone else. I wasn't in a snit but when my mother got so sick I was designing a site with 63 United Methodist churches on it. I could no longer handle the updates to it, there were many with that many churches so I had to give it up. My problem wasn't giving the info to the guy that was going to take it over it was getting him to take everything out of my name.

Kay I did offer a section on mountain-breeze.com free of advertising, rest of my site would have advertising on it but not the RCTQ section, or I offered to buy a domain and space and use one banner ad per page, just enough so that in a year I might make my money back. If I were doing the site I would also put up the FAQ for the newsgroup. Now when I said that about business pages, I meant I was going to do it for my own personal site and have been collecting links to places I have bought from and have had good service. I would also offer a section to put people's quits up if I bought the domain and was allowed one banner ad, I could still ad quilts to the pages for those that don't have a section else where or would just like to be able to have them load faster. I have offered to do this for Polly when she did her Bert quilt, but someone had already offered to put it in their photo bucket page, I believe was the place.

I am like you I love to design websites, only I don't have a desire to learn flash, just in case you didn't know this, sites that open with flash rarely get picked up by search engines because they do not pick up the flash codes. Same with all the java on pages. Sometimes the less you know the better you are. :) esp. when it comes to search engines, now you need to know all you can about how they work, etc. but I am speaking of the flash and such things.

Sorry so long, and have a great day I am behind in reading again,

Just had a thought - could there be some kind of mind jogger posted every now and then so that newbies/people who don't read often/people who haven't bookmarked it, could find the pages?

I use Norton Internet Security; they have an option to disable flash ads. When I went to the 2007 version, I had to download some additional stuff to get the flash ad disable to work, but I sure like not seeing the flash ads.

I'm interested in learning FLASH mostly if I get to teach in a computer lab again. Makes it more interesting for kids learning how to do WebPages. For my own general purposes, I'd like to learn more about design and layout. Also CSS -- that would save me a lot of time!

Grand idea! With the traffic in this group, how often? I'll set a audio reminder in my Outlook Calendar. Is once a week too often? Or not often enough?

How often do we repost the FAQs. That seems like it might be once a month. I think that would work for a reminder.

Yes, that was my thought too. Perhaps they could both go on on the first of the month (ish!)
