Dear Hannah Quilt

I was looking at buying the Dear Hannah Quilt book, but before I splash out - What are the instructions like? Does the book have good drawings and instructions for each block? Can most of the blocks be hand pieced or would I need to use my machine?

Thank you for any advice

If it's anything like the Dear Jane, there are NO instructions. Just the patterns drawn to scale and some pictures of options of finished projects.

There's a great deal of applique in Dear Hannah.

Your preferred technique should work in making the patterns, as you can use hand or machine. Paperpiecing also works well for some of the squares.

I recommend looking at the book physically before buying it. Get it through interlibrary loan if you have to.

Yes, I wondered that, when I read Sarah's question; but, as I haven't investigated Dear Hannah (switching my interest after Dear Jane to Quilted Diamonds), thought I'd better not say anything. But, I think it has been put together by the same lady (Brenda Papadakis) who did Dear Jane, so the content might be similar, if not the same.

However, all that being said, I really have enjoyed/am still enjoying! working out how to make the Dear Jane blocks.

I wonder if there is a Dear Hannah group, as there is a Dear Jane group? If so, it is possible to get instructions and help from the members of the group. The Dear Jane one is much like a newsgroup, in that information is exchanged (though I can't quite remember the format). Do you belong to the group Georg? .

I did for a while, but the messages were way too many- it was overwhelming. Dear Hannah is not off topic in the group, so a lot help can be found there.

I looked at the Dear Hannah book, about the same time I picked up the Dear Jane. They looked about the same formatwize, with a lot more applique.

Dear Jane is based on an extant quilt from 1863... Pictured here:

Brenda P. drafted blocks/patterns based upon it directly. Jane Stickle being the original "mother" quilt, all of the baby Janes are often referred to as Dear Janes or Baby Janes. The mailing list can be accessed from the dearjane.com link. Dear Hannah is based on the same style of quilt- the 13 x 13 blocks 4.5 inches, then the triangles and kites around it. However, Brenda and friends drafted whole new things to fill the shapes. Blocks do not repeat between the two quilts. Because Jane used so much geometric shaping, it was easier to focus on applique for Dear Hannah.
