Fabric Dieters' Update

A few weeks ago a group of hands shot up to accept the challenge NOT to buy any fabric for the month of October.

Well I have reached day 21, and although I have ordered fabric for a couple of students I have not added so much as one inch of fabric to any of the orders for me.

How are the other dieters going? Anyone got the shakes yet?

Tho I hadn't bought any fabric since May or June, I did buy 1/2 yard the other day for a challenge row by row quilt.

Okay. We need specificity here. Does buying batting, irons, SMs, blades, needles or other good stuff count? Can we claim abstinence if we only did not buy fabric? Polly

OOPs! I fell off the wagon. Just a little bounce, but nonetheless.....I've purchased fabric....but not much! I suppose I have to start all over. KJ

Is that like being just a little bit pregnant? KJ

I slipped. The deadline for the guild quilt show entry was crashing toward me and I used up the last piece of one piece of fabric just to realize I couldn't match it with anything else -- ran to Craft Warehouse and bought 1/2 yard to match. Also I bought two books I really, really had to have from Amazon. Really. Couldn't wait. Oh, and I donated $3 to the local YMCA in return for one pass through an estate sale with a bag. I filled it with fabric. Well, what did you expect......did you think I'd fill it with silly kitchen gadgets or vintage cufflinks or maybe 78 record albums? Does that count? Anyway, that's it for me. I just had to drop my sewing machine off at the shop. Gonna be $100 at least. I can't imagine spending another penny for a long time.

JUST FABRIC

Other stuff doesn't count at all. That was the concensus back at the beginning of the month IIRC

I failed miserable. I gained another 7.5 yards. sob sob sob. No such thing as low fat fabric lol But in my defense, I do belive that 5 yards was bought just before the diet began, and just arrived late but I forget lol.

If you bought it before your diet began, delivery time is not your fault so it doesn't count. But that still leaves

2.5 yards to confess.

Would a group hug give you the strength to try again? It's only 30 days!!

Wow! I passed the test. It's been more then a month. I even turned down a trip to Landenberg, PA this weekend because I knew I would spend lots of money on fabric. Does that give me bonus points? Actually, it hasn't been that hard. I needed to curb my spending due to the new Bernina I bought, which left a void in our budget (not to mention a couple of large renovation projects on the house that left a bigger gap in our budget). School keeps me so busy that I do not have time to quilt. I'm debating on whether I should go to the latte quilt course today as I don't have time to even embroider. Hey, I even cleaned out my stash and gave fabric away and *gasp* it hasn't even been replaced. I think I am going through some withdrawal, my tummy hurts!

does it count if someone else buys fabric for you? My sister messaged me to tell me she'd found some polar fleece at the market for $1 metre. I was at work and didn't get the message until later that day. I rang her to tell her I was still on a stash reduction mission and wasn't buying fabric but would have liked to have said yes to a few metres each of navy and grey. Her response - "Oh, I knew you'd want some, I bought you 3m each of navy and grey!" How could I say no? :-) I haven't paid her yet though, so if I wait another 10 days it won't count at all for October :-p

Besides that, I've been very good. The only fabric I've bought since March has been the backing for 2 quilts. Funny though, the stash looks like it's getting bigger. I think maybe moving it about has fluffed it up.

LOL - I can't wait to see who finds it! No seriously, I believe I stuck it into the quilt for "safe keeping" - now I just can't find the spot. It'll show eventually!

I'm afraid I fell off the wagon. I had a coupon and an almost finished quilt that needed a backing. Coupons are such enablers!

Well, I have been following this thread with interest. However, I did not raise my hand. I've been trying to cut back on fabric acquisition for a whole year now. Life has just been to busy to get much sewing in and fabric storage is becoming a problem. It's actually getting easier to walk into a fabric store and come out empty handed, as time goes on. I just keep asking myself, WHEN???? am I going to do something with that? and/or where will I store it? My downfall has been fat quarters. Specially on line. It's so easy to say "It won't take up any space!" I think in the last 6 months I've probably ordered 200 of them! Anyway, reading this thread this morning, DH asked what was new, so I told him about this little self-help group here. His response was that he thought you all were being totally irresponsible. He feels that kind of denial will result in binge shopping at the end of the month !

His thought was that we should not buy anymore than 90% of what we used. That way the stash would continually go down by 10%, but we would still have the joy of buying fabric.

When he first started talking I was thinking that maybe I wasn't doing so bad after all. But when he got to that 90% part, I realized I'm still in trouble. I haven't used anything in quite some time. Even though my hand didn't go up, so far in October I've only bought fabric for a ladies group that I belong to. It is nylon not cotton so, no, I didn't get any extras for myself.

Good luck ladies
