Finished Challenge Entry

It's done. I finishedthe Voice Within Me challenge for quiltart.com. The entry is in andnow I wait to see if my piece is juried into the show or not. I didsomething I've not done before. This piece is completely abstract. Itis certainly not "pretty" but I hope it says something. I'm just notsure what, lol. The theme of the challenge is basically what is thebasis for your inspiration. I tried so many things. Then about threeweeks ago I had an incredible burst of inspiration and made what Iwanted to enter. Then people saw it and even my husband went "yuck".The only one who liked it was my son. So I took scissors and rotarycutter and cut the thing apart and put something new back together,racing the deadline, which was last night. I made it by a hair. Thenthey extended the deadline for two weeks. grrrrr. Anyway, my entry is named "Through Any Given Window" and is about how my inspiration comes from the surprises, the glimpsed moments of incongruity or beauty or even not beauty. Take a look and let me know what you think. Today it's all done, but I'm stressing that the photos I sent aren't high enough resolution and wondering if I can resubmit them in higher res.

I'm fascinated by it and would like to see it up close and personal. Abstract is not normally something I'm attracted to, but I like this - maybe it's the colors or the layout, I'm not sure. Let us know if it's accepted!

I agree, Louise, there is something about it, but it's hard to define. I like that not only what you see through the windows is different, but also that the windows are different.

Very interesting result - it is something that would attract attention in a quilt show I think. (But I am curious - how does it compare with your first version?)

There is no way to compare. My very first version was a butterfly. Yuck. That was the overall greeting from my near and dear. So then I made an urban setting, all gray scale, and put a butterfly into it. Yuck and more yuck. So I took off the butterfly, cut the "city" into the blocks you see in the body of the piece, and added the windows that are top and bottom. I had incorporated an ivy fabric into the original urban piece but it was totally lost in the new setting. So, I made the reverse applique ivy climbing up the brick wall. The wall was originally a "landscape" fabric of reddish bricks. I painted it very gray and pale and then turned it over and used the back. The paint saturated through to the back and gave just the right color and texture look. I'm not unhappy with this. It's not a "pretty" quilt. Definitely not what I'd give my mom for a Christmas present. But then that wasn't the goal.

Sometimes we can get more interesting effects when we are dissatisfied with the way a project looks and then don't mind playing around - because there is no worry about 'ruining' it. Sounds like this happened to you with your challenge - you came up with something quite out of the ordinary.
