Good(ish) news

I thought I might brighten some people's day with sort of good news, for me. As many of you know I have been trying to get Social Security Disability for several years. I kept hoping that I would be able to go back to regular work and finally realized it wasn't going to happen. Anyway, to shorten things up, I finally had a hearing with a "judge" the first part of March. He verbally approved my application effective date of March 31,2007. So I have been waiting for the paper work to wend its way through the system. A couple of weeks ago I got finally got the written decision which had some interesting stuff in it. (The doctor the SSA sent me to for evaluation noted "fibromyalgia-like symptoms for one.) On Wed. I got a form for "Extra Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan costs. Thurs. I got a notice to sign up for a "permanent password" on the SSA site. Fri. I got my Medicare card. (no info on who/what/ etc, but I have my card!!) Today I got the Notice of Award. And notice that I will start getting payments in June. Not sure when the lump sum will happen, but finally there is light at the end of the tunnel and it isn't a train coming at me this time. As soon as I can figure out the Medicare stuff I can find a doctor, get in to see her/him and hopefully get back on some pain meds, and other meds. As well as get an overdue mammogram and Well Woman exam, and check some "spots" that I am concerned about.

There is positive news in the world.

And I may be able to go to Houston for Festival this year.

Having fun in the heat, Pati, in Phx

Oh, excellent! And fingers are crossed that the spots are nothing to worry about.

WOOHOO!!! What a feeling to finally have this over with and a great outcome! Most people seem to have the money for the back pay in their account a few days before they get the letter. You might want to check.

I'm really, really happy for you!

I'm so pleased for you Pati. Looks like the years of anxiety might be coming to an end. I really hope the tests reveal nothing sinister and that you can start afresh for a new phase of your life. Thanks for sharing your good news. . In message , "Pati, in Phx" writes

I'm so happy for you, Pati. So unfair to have to keep working at it for so long to get what you should get. I was lucky beyond words to get disability within 6 months of application. I think the psychiatrist was the one who secured my disability payments. I have Medicare, but not the prescription part. Still it's a lifesaver. I'm glad you will be getting medicare care again. Definitely take care of those 'well woman' needs.

Hello Pati in Phoenix, Congratulations on your good news.... We live in Mesa. My son really needs to apply for SSD. Have a couple questions if you would care to e mail me. Main interest is did you do it all by yourself or use an attorney???

Actually it will depend on how large the back payment is. Ash and I got our approval very quickly, we did not have to go to court or anything, so our back payments were fairly small. The back payments came in with our first monthly check. kiri had to wait and wait, and reapply and wait, and go to court. her back payment is rather large as a result. They have divided it up into smaller payments, four I think, which they are sending on a schedule.
