Green Band Needles

In a few posts recently, I've noted reference to green band needles. I am probably not the only one not familiar with those needles. So, what's up with green band needles?

When you get too old to read, you can still see colors. It's just plain old quilting needles with a green band just below the shank, made by Schmetz. We've been able to find them in a size 90 and also a size 70. I love the

70, neighbor loves the 90, seldom use anything else unless forced to hem jeans for somebody I love a whole lot. Polly

You have to love them a WHOLE LOT! Just found out yesterday that my Sis IRONS their jeans! Butterfly (you coulda knocked me over with a feather cause she HATED to iron when she was growing up--it usually was MY job--I didn't mind cause my Dad would say that he could tell when I did it--he wasn't one to give compliments very often)

Schmetz quilting needles have a green band, jeans needles are blue, macrotex purple. And my new lovely titanium needles are all-over gold :-) Annoyingly, the topstitch needles don't have a color band. I like those too for some things. Roberta in D

A quilt shop owner told me that the size 70 green band needles are for piecing, the 90 green band needles are for quilting. Makes sense to me!

I decided long ago that if I loved someone enough to hem their jeans, I loved them enough to teach them how to hem their own jeans. Same goes for ironing. :)

Probably that depends on your SM. My Berninas purr with the smaller needle, they clatter with the 90. We must be wary of what quilt shop owners tell us. One told my neighbor that she should change her needle after every hour of stitching. Now wouldn't that be something? Polly

Sounds like she wanted to sell lots and lots of needles! I've always heard after 8 hours you should change needles. I change mine when I can hear it!

However, the titanium needles last a lot longer.... 2-3 times longer at least. (Unless you really do an "ooops" with one of course. )

Microtex of course, the brain doesn't always connect fully to the typing finger. The titanium ones are Madeira "metallic" for embroidery. But they work just great for quilting. Roberta in D

There are titanium needles available from OESD, at least some Bernina dealers carry them. These are Organ brand, I believe.(The shop where I teach is a Bernina dealer and they carry them. Bernina recommends them, evidently. ) There was an OESD "seminar" where they talked about them along with the other products from the company. Yes there was a fee, but you got lots of "stuff" too in addition to the information.

Pati,> : ) I'll have to watch for the titanium needles.
