Handpiecing Question

What method to you use to make sure your seam lines line up when you hand piece? I'm using the stab thru the line with a pin and out thru the other side (hoping to hit the line on the other side) method. Is there a better way? The dahlia is going together by hand and so I am drawing around the template and cutting it out, adding a rough 1/4 seam allowance. I wouldnt mind some advice, if there is an easier or more accurate way to get things lined up I would love to hear it. Thank you, Diana

Diana, I don't do a lot of handpiecing, but was just thinking about doing some (Dear Jane) but I did a DWR table runner with 3 rings by hand. I did it like you described. I pinned the pieces first matching up the sewing lines with the point of the pins. I seemed to work ok with a pin in each end and then one in the middle for small pieces or at the quarter marks for larger ones.
