How Many Quilts?

The "to do" spreadsheet has a number of columns: Priority Finished! Project Name To be done [5 columns] Done by?

I list in order of importance, X when finished, and in the to be done columns list the various steps [finish blocks, set, layer, quilt, binding], then stroke through as each is done...that way I can track the progress on each. I'm not good at getting them done by the date I set, but I'm at least trying! When they're finished, they get listed on the finished sheet for the year: I've been tracking in this Excel workbook since 2003.

So maybe I need to just make tops and half quilted sandwiches for a few years and then finish several in following years. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I have categories of quilts. I have finished three this year, but they were not very big (about 54" square) and they were all machine pieced/quilted. These are "quickies".

My "real" quilts are the hand appliqued ones, usually at least queen size. Of those I finish maybe one every couple of years, I start at least two to four others a year (yep, that would account for all the project boxes stacked around LOL) and I plan/design (right up to printing designs/templates and collecting fabrics) about six a year.

I don't work anymore but teaching eats into my time significantly, and I find I am reluctant to spread out my work if I know I will have to pack it away in a few hours for a class. So I have set up a second sewing area for my work. Unfortunately it is a great area in spring/summer/autumn, but uninviting in winter, so it will be a few months yet before I find out if this will increase the quilt output significantly. I don't do much sewing in winter.

Like many others, I have far more plans than I will ever have time for, and I am racing rapidly failing eyesight. Starting new quilts for me is really being in denial - but I am OK with living in a state of denial LOL.

Jiminy christmas. That's just way too organized for words. My compliments!

Phew! I'm with you Georg, I'm *still* trying to finish the nightmare quilt - it's about half handquilted now. Can't wait to be able to bind that sucker and say "it's done"!

So far in 2006 I have fionished 2 quilts; mom's memory quilt and a baby quilt. I have a few tops that need to be finished, but they don't count.

My gosh; 10 quilts in a year?????

I wonder if I will EVER manage that....

counting magazine work (since I do keep the quilt after it has been photographed and been to a few shows and shops)

1 kids quilt, 2 bags, a coin purse & 3 art quilts *with* patterns so these projects take longer I have made several tops for *me* put the binding on two mini quilts and finished some tops I made last year

Wow Kim, that's a lot of quilts and what organization! If my SIL was a quilter, she'd probably keep a spread sheet like you. When we have a family get together, she keeps a spread sheet of what needs to be done and at what time. If you show up with a dish that needs to go in the oven, she can tell you when it can go in depending on what needs to go out! I think it's a family thing. DH is a spreadsheet person. Makes a "to do" list which includes how much time is allotted to the task. Way too organized for me! Of course, I've been known to add to his list ;o) - but don't tell him that! LOL

Hmm -don't normally keep track. But I've given away 2 kid size and one single size that were started after Jan 1, finished the 2005 BOM, have a queen size nearly quilted (although the blocks were done earlier). Plus lots more in the works. It's hard to keep track with so much going on at the same time. Should one count finished pieces whose blocks have been on the shelf for a while? Or only pieces started and finished in a calendar year? Does it count if I just quilt a raffle project that also contains several of my blocks? (2 of those planned) Roberta in D

I have a similar system, but mine's on a white board and the project gets erased after it's finished. Not right after... I like some time to bask in the finished glow!

Perhaps I ought to consider adding an Excel spreadsheet. Thanks for the idea!

I average about 3 quilts a year, from crib size to twin. One year I got 6 done, but the next year 0, but that averaged out.

This year, I've completed 3 small art quilts, but no bed/couch/cuddle quilts.

I haven't a clue. As soon as they are finished they're gone. I'm still trying to finish the ones for me but that never seems to happen - I'm gaining on them but not yet done.

I get about 2 quilts a year..... Just did a count and have completed 8 since I started in 2004, including 4 single, 2 crib, and 2 double. I have 2 tops completed and 2 hand pieced tops started also the 2 BOM's for this year. I also have a couple of other small projects on the go.

Much more than what I realised

Good question :-)

If I manage to finish one big quilt per year ( I think queen size ) that's great for me. But there are always smaller things completed. This year I completed 2 preemie quilts, 1 pair of potholders, worked on swap blocks. No queen size quilt this year so far, but a top is nearly completed, so I hope to get it done this year.
