how many chisels

I thought I had an OK collection of chisels to serve my needs a 1 inch roughing gouge a 1/2 bowl gouge a round scraper and a hollowing scraper. In total I have maybe 5 or 6 tools that I use.

Then I saw a turning demo at woodcraft that the person giving the demo had maybe a dozen to 20 different gouges and scrapers out. I did not stay for the entire demo so I don't know if all of them were actually used but I begain to wonder what others had in their collection.

I tell my wife that I always need at least one more. I don't think you can have to many. When someone comes out with a new thingamajig that is gonna perform a miracle some of us just have to have it. I think this is what the tool companies are counting on. Nashville, Georgia

Some of us even have the original 8 carbon steel tools that came with the lathe twenty years ago. Believe I've used 24 tools, but not four of my scrapers in the last two weeks.

I have a total of 24 tools but there are about 4 that I frequently use turning bowls and 4 that I use when doing spindles. I am very careful of buying special tools since you usually find out later you can do the same thing with a regular tool or a shop-made gizmo. billh

I spent several hours today in my shop turning a bowl. I used a parting tool, a 1/2" skew, a Sorby multi-tip hollowing tool and a 3/8" bowl gouge. But, I have about 30+ tools in my shop.
