Machine Problems Again(long)

Jill, have you tried the only suggestion our techy dept. at work used to offer? Have you turned it off, unplugged it (that wards off evil spirits or something) and then tried it again? I think the geek translation of that is 'shut up and reboot'. Probably, with the load of stitching that you do, you need something seriously heavy like the old Viking 9000. I kind of doubt that the Emerald is sturdy enough for the likes of you. I wish I could just hand you a SM for 'in the meanwhile'. There are two beautiful old Singers just sitting here. All they ever get is admired and I know they could keep you going until your new SM comes home. @#$! Do try the reboot thing. With sympathy, Polly

Is the machine still under warranty? Can you force them to replace the unit or.... maybe even refund your money so you can buy a different machine? Seems to me sewing machines should be like marriages .... if the basic assumption isn't met then you ought to be able to get an annulment.

Man, Jill, that stinks. I'm sorry you're having all these troubles that shut down your sewing. Do think about an old Singer for a back up machine. You can get nice ones for $10-50. It doesn't have to be a Featherweight or a 221... just a little 99 or a 15-91. I'm no expert when it comes to the old Singers but they are easy to use and you can do some repairs and the maintenance yourself. I have a darling 1950 model 15-91 that I love- bought it on eBay about 10 years ago for $25 plus $15 shipping. Just about any old

I have a 401A that's tan....it's one of the good Singers too! I just don't use it anymore. However my mother always seems to use it when she comes to visit. My Bernina's are always out and ready to go, but she unpacks the Singer because it's the one she and her mother used to have. At least I know it still works every few years!!!

I have a black Singer 301. They came in the long and short bed version. Very cool machine.

Jill, I am so sorry to hear about your problems with your machine. I would feel lost if I didn't have a machine to sew on. I wish I could email you one.......LOL....which one would you like. Does your dealer allow trade-ins? I traded my last machine in for the wonderful Janome

Gosh, Jill, I don't blame you for being upset. Have you talked to anyone about the possibility of getting the machine completely replaced?

I have three 301s that are black :) They actually came in different colors - black, mocha, and oyster & tan.

I thought my buying the Berninas, serger and other stuff on ebay was pretty scary with no dealer to service or back up a warranty. Maybe just 'buying' is scary. Polly

I have bought more than a machine or two on Ebay. My Brother 1500 (new) had to be sent back for a small problem but I knew that was the warranty when I bought it. I have been happy with the new serger I bought online. There have been a few FW's and other vintage machines too. I have had really good luck overall. I think the odds are that problems are few and addressed adequately most of the time and that is really good. Boy if you have the odd problem though you are really looking for that paddle store up the creek.

Thanks for all your support! Forunately, I do have a back up, my MIL old White/Viking. It works OK, but is getting tired. It's really frustrating to pay good money for a new machine only to have it break down after just a couple of months. I do sew about 20 hours a week, but I don't think that had anything to do with it. Thanks again for listening!

Sorry to hear this. We do feel your pain. I'd push for a replacement machine because anything out of commission that long has got to be a lemon.

You didn't know that Singer had bought Husqvarna did you?
