Machine quilting just for fun

May I recommend a very good book? The crib quilt nearly finished here is alternating rows of cowboy boots and horizontal rows of just plain solid. The solid insisted that it needed something besides mindless meandering. I remembered that I had picked up Laura Lee Fritz's book 'Creative Classics' at a quilt show but had never played with it. Many of her designs are a lot harder than I'm willing to try but quite a few are okay for half a mind. Her section on Flaunting the Feathers was easy and looks wonderful. I need to use a Crayola washable pen to establish the placing of the feathers' spines, never got confident enough to try feathers without it. There's not been a problem with the Crayola pens washing out but you would want to be sure not to touch them with a hot iron. Don't know why anyone would ever need to iron a quilted quilt but you never know. Maybe I've read too many stupid safety warnings lately. Anyhow. Laura Lee Fritz has two other books; one on appliqué and another MQ titled Mindful Meandering. Check them out when you can. Polly

My favorite safety warning came with the newest iron. "Do not iron garment while wearing it". Polly

No, I didn't. There are quilters here who are skilled enough to show you the book and even open a page or two to let you peek inside but I am not one of those. The feather pattern I used from the book is easy enough to describe though. Instead of graceful furly whirly feathers, the ones I tried looked more like a 4 year-old had drawn spikey waves pounding the seashore. Or a shark badly in need of orthodontia. Even then, I had to mark the quilt with a line to have the feather spines even. But. I'll get better. Maybe even dangerous. Nice to have you here. Polly
