My first attempt at using Google Groups

Have to say I have been away for a bit, posting that is. I have kept up with my reading though. Yes, I have lost my comcast newsgroup and am dispondent. ~sigh~ I tried another free access, but couldn't post, just read. I guess this will just have to work.

Can anyone tell me how to mark the postings I have read? Is there a way to highlight posts you want to follow?

It has been fun looking through all the links being posted for fun Christmas gifts. There are always a few that I end up trying, and as usual, give away. I have trouble hanging on to anything for myself, but that doesn't take away the fun of making them.

For anyone who knows me, I will be finally having surgery on the two herniated disks in my neck two weeks from today. Then later on the two in my lower back. The old replace and fuse routine. Anything to get rid of these horrific headaches and the numbness in my arms. I'm looking forward to it as much as anyone can look forward to being knocked out and cut open. Oh well, wish me luck.

There is a star next to the thread, if you click on this it cahnges to yellow. This could be a way to follow individual threads.

As for marking them read I think that they change colour. If they don't then I can't help sorry.

I used Google for a couple of years as my ISP dropped it. When we changed ISP's I was able to access newsgroups again. I know a lot of people don't like Google but I didn't mind it and found it good when I wanted to search for old threads.

Good luck with the surgery. I have a friend who just had back surgery (about

8 weeks ago), and for the first time in 10 years is pain free. I hope yours is as successful!

As far as Google, I don't know enough about it to be much help. During a period of time when I lost newsgroups, I used motzarella, and that worked really well for me. Might want to give it a try.

Good luck with your surgery, Boca Jan. I hope it gives you some relief from your back pain.

I don't use Google Groups except to research archived postings, so I'm sorry I can't help you there.

Oh yes we DO wish you good luck, and a quick recovery; we'll be praying that your surgeries will go just beautifully and that your pains will be long gone. It could happen, it does happen. Now as to Google, I have no idea what I'm talking about but somehow I changed myself over to news.individual.net or something like that. I think they do their magic in Germany, the cost is small - something like a dollar or two a month. There was nothing to learn or re-learn, the newsgroup setup was exactly like it had been. Polly

Prayers and good thoughts to you on your surgery.

I started using motzarella when comcast in their infinite wisdom got rid of newsgroups. I read and post just like I did with comcast. And it is free, too.

There is a free news server available through . I used it with Thunderbird for a while when Charter news server was acting flaky. It worked well. Just change the profile you used with comcast to specify the values for aioe. The aioe website tells you what values to use.

I second using news.individual.net- it's often referred to as 'the German news server'. There's virtually no spam and it's easy to use- and I'm a true blonde when it comes to computers! I will warn you- if you pay by credit card, don't be surprised if your credit card company phones you to verify the charge. Mine called within 2 minutes when an out-of-the-country charge came in for the individual.net charges of approx. $14 a year. I was most impressed.

And I wish you the very best with your surgery. May the recovery be short and easy and may your pain be all gone. You've suffered quite enough. Take gentle care of yourself.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate your best wishes. I am starting to get nervous, only one more week to go. Almost have a top done...I have been working on it like crazy to finish up. I am making it with all charms and jelly roll strips. Easy peasy...a four patch with strips around it then sew it. Have edging and then the back. I have fat quarters of the same material that I am going to sew together.
