My "new" stash.

Today, a friend of my wifes came over to the house with a present. This woman had recently lost her mother and she was going through the things to clean out the house in order to put it on the market for sale. She brought me a large plastic trash bag with bolts of small print quilting fabric and cutting templates and rotary cutting mats and said that she hoped I could use them. I was floored. The prints are all lovely and in colors I would probably have chosen to use if I had bought them. Muslin 108" back material in bolts. I was overwhelmed. I had done a few favors over the years for this woman and she must have seen this as a way to pay me back. Now I do have the foundation of a stash and it has some meaning as the woman who died was a very accomplished quilter and I have a chance to continue her legacy. Out of her passing a memory is carried on. A truly remarkable day.

I'm so glad you have experienced 'inheritance' John. It will be nice to be making things with that fabric and thinking of the link between past and present. . In message , John writes

What a lovely thing for your DW's friend to have done! And how wonderful that the fabrics are the sorts you'll be happy using! :)

What a nice story, John. I know it will get used since you are such a quick quilter. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I am sure that as a quilter the lady would have been pleased to see her precious stash passed on to someone who appreciates it.

I have never "inherited" any stash as such. Our group was given a lot of fabric by the DH of one of our members who passed away. We finished her quilts that were in progress and made him a quilt from part of her stash.

BTW - I think my group are all waiting for me to fall off my perch so they can "inherit" (rofl)

It couldn't have happened to a nicer person. People do remember the kindnesses you do in this life. Enjoy the gift, and remember the legacy of a fellow quilter with joy.

Sometimes blessings come from the strangest places. I am glad you received the gift and that she didn't toss it all into the trash.

Actually she divided up the total amount of fabric into different piles that she thought would be useful to various entities. She is giving a sizable amount to the local high school home ec. class teacher for use by the class for projects. She likes my quilts and chose things that she thought I would like based on my quilts already produced. They are spot on as to style of fabric. I am sure the other stuff will be as greatly appreciated as mine were. I am now searching for a thank you card that would be theme appropriate.

Get one of those cards that will take an insert - and make a small piece of patchwork for it! . In message , John writes

Do you mean like those ones that show the center of a currency bill? My wife usually buys all of the cards that we send, ( Is it not always the woman who is the responsible one for writing)? I have a college bookstore hereabouts that is stocked with a large selection of pretty nice card offerings so I will head up that way this weekend and see what is available.

I don't think I can have seen one of those you describe. However, these cards - with a square, round or oval cut out of the front piece of card

- have a paper back to the card face and a small piece of patchwork could be slid in. I have seen such cards in sewing/quilting shops, craft shops, but not card shops!

(And, yes, I do all the card-buying in our house, except those for me >g
