off topic but urgent

I have a young friend who just turned 18. For about 5 or 6 weeks now she has been having mental health issues. It came on very suddenly, like - overnight almost, and no one knows WHY on earth this has hit her. She is extremely anxious, and paranoid. She has developed an eating disorder, as in, doesn't want to eat. And she is socially non-functional. She can speak maybe a whole sentence sometimes, but usually just phrases or a word, or it dies off in silence.

She has another Dr. appt. in the morning. She has been taking increased doses of I-don't-really-know-what as she has been seeing him once a week for two weeks, and now in the morning. What we need is for this dear young adult to consent to being admitted into the hospital. He has wanted to admit her from day one, but she hasn't wanted to go. She thinks there's nothing wrong with her.

My heart is breaking for this girl's dilemma. She is 5th in her class and has already been accepted at three colleges, and now this. So please send all your prayers and good thoughts her way tonight and in the morning, so she will be admitted and get the help she needs. Thank you so much.

Karen, I'm sending hugs and prayers and tons of empathy. Been there done that got too many of those t-shirts. Our youngest son went through a similar thing only he was at a younger age. I hope and pray that this young lady agrees to be admitted and get treatment. It's a difficult situation for all involved.

Hugs, Mika

Oh, Karen! Prayers and good thoughts on the way from Tucson. This sounds serious, and if anyone can persuade her to follow the doctor's suggestions it will help her no end. The medication may be wrong, but the doctor can't tell unless he/she can observe her closely.

Oh dear, Karen. I wonder if the doctor is considering schizophrenia? I have a friend who was diagnosed when he was 18. Fortunately, medication has helped him tremendously and he does fairly well. (I think he'd do really well, if he had more family support, but he never did. He's 43 now.) In any case, hospitalization does seem to be necessary to get the meds worked out.

I'm sending positive thoughts for your young friend.

Hi Karen It is difficult in this type of thing. Is what she is taking a prescribed medicine? If so, is the dr aware of the side effects? It maight be reacting with her body chemistry.

Will she consent to bloodwork being done to help figure this out? Did she have something traumatic happen recently that is just now manifesting itself [witness something? involved in an accident?]? Is there a recent change in her family surroundings or friends level? Is she having a severe reaction to some food additives?

I currently work the County's Mental Health courtroom, and it is so very clear to me what a fine line sanity/mental paralysis can be. My mother had mental health problems that we discovered only after her passing. My father and all the kids were able to clearly see specific patterns that we had never been able to name before.

Holding your young friend close in my meditations. And, bless you Karen, for caring!

Hugs to you and your young friend, Karen. I went thru something similar with my son when he was 15. He started with stomach aches, couldn't eat, wouldn't leave the house or allow any of his friends to come to ours. It was very upsetting for the whole family. Of course, I was thinking it was a medical problem, but after they had put him thru every conceivable test, they told me I should look into mental health issues. My son is now 25, and has conquered most of the problem but I can still see signs. It changed him drastically. We rarely see the carefree, fun loving comedian he used to be. I hope the doctors that your friend deals with can come up with a way to help her.

How sad, Karen. I hope the 'mental health' doctors are checking for any biological factors (as well as psychological) by means of blood tests, scans and such. Sudden onset sounds suspiciously like a chemical or physical change. All good wishes for her recovery. . In message , "Karen, Queen of Squishies" writes

Being so sudden, makes me wonder if she's had a physical exam as well. Perhaps its really a blood clot or some such that is affecting her.
