OT Bah. Humbug.

You already know this but let me nag and bore you once again. Check your Christmas shopping bills line-by-line. My credit card company called me today to question some unlikely activity on my account. Yes. They certainly were unlikely. Shopping online is a special joy for me since there's not a lot left here since Katrina, and I'm not dismayed or even particularly annoyed - fraud just goes with the territory. All I'll have to do is sign an affidavit that the charges against my card were not mine. While I'm nagging, I might as well mention that if you're about to do something peculiar such as buying a condo in Ballalahongawalla, you probably ought to dial the 1-800 number on the back of your card and let them know of your intent. It does irk me most of the time that Big Brother is watching me and I do my best to thwart his attempts. For my credit card company, that's okay. Go look over your bills. Polly

If your credit card connects through to a a program called Shop Safe, you can save yourself a ton of trouble. I refuse to buy anything online without using Shop Safe. It is tied to my credit card, I go to Shop Safe and tell them I need a number. It generates a credit card number up to the amount I tell it (must be less than than your credit card limit) and I tell them how long I want the number to be good, usually only 2 months. I usually add about $5 to the bill so that I don't have the card bounce should the shipping or tax come out to a bit more than I thought. I give them this new number, but the credit card company charges my real card. If some ding dong tries to steal the number, they only get a limit of $5 and after 2 months, the number is dead. If I see that the $5 is used at a site other than I authorized, I can get it taken care of, my identity is still safe, and the rest of the card is still secure.

DH & I charge everything, and just pay the bill in full every month. I keep all receipts until I receive the statement, and I don't pay anything that looks suspicious. Several times when we have been on a trip, the charge would initially be denied until we told them we were traveling. Now I call them before we leave, and there are no problems. I think there have only been 2 items that I have ever had to dispute.

We do the same thing - charge almost everything but pay it off each month. I log onto our account daily to compare our statement to our charge slips, so I'd know right away if anything was on there that shouldn't be. Identity theft scares the beejeebers out of me, so I keep a really close eye on things. So far, so good!
