Congratulations Di. That is a wonderful achievement. I remember when we did the same thing - it is a fantastic feeling. Thanks for sharing the joy. I hope it just goes on and on. . In message , Di writes
Isn't that a wonderful feeling?! Our house has been paid for about 4 years now. Last year, we did major inside work like new carpet, new laminate flooring, stone entryway, new bathrooms, and we paid for that as we went. We haven't had a car payment for 17 years. We tend to keep our cars a long time. We always pay cash when we buy a new car, and we always order it with all the bells and whistles. We use a credit card for everything, but we pay it in full each month. Happy dancing for you.
Conga-rats Di. We also purchased a fix-it-up, but we paid it off first we were lucky and bought when prices were still low and paid it off in about 6 years. So far we've fixed the roof and the bathroom, although I'm completely happy with the bathroom - the builder was rather quick to cut corners to get the job done quick, ie: a bit bodgy... The only other thing that has been fixed was a window that broke and the gutters and downpipes got done with the roof. DH recently bought a site shed office, which also needs a bit of fixing, to move his office out of the house so we've got room inside to shuffle things around to start renovating other parts of the house and prepare for extensions.
Congratulations, Di! :D That' a *huge* achievement. I know how happy we were to pay off our old house -- though now that we've moved here, we have a new mortgage.
Congratulations Di! That's a wonderful accomplishment..... Considering I just bought my house 3 years ago, I'm a looooong way from paying mine off, but I DO keep credit card balances, etc, to a minimum, and all the "home improvements" I've done since the purchase have been paid for up front. I look forward to the day when I can make the same post you did!!
Thank you all for your lovely words. We paid it off 15 years earlier than the loan agreement.
Yes, it is a great feeling have just woken up from my first sleep in my very own home. We too bought this house when prices were low and it was rundown and painted orange inside. We have painted inside and out, recarpeted some rooms - about to carpet the lounge, renovated both bathrooms, added verandas, currently moving laundry from pokey little room to small enclosed veranda which is three times bigger. I will now have an area for a linen closet at long last. The kitchen is next after the laundry - that will be bliss when it is finished.
Fortunately for us, DH is a maintenance manager and does all the work himself so it is only a matter of buying, either second-hand/new or seconds, the materials we need.
No credit cards here, and the cars are ours, but the house won't be paid off for many years. Oh well like the song says, "two out of three ain't bad." Debra in VA See my quilts at
By any chance are you listed on "freecycle" on your computer? Often I will see offers where someone is giving away carpet, curtains, and about anything you can think of and all this stuff is in working condition----- they have just decided to get a new one. You just have to answer that you want it. Barbara in SC----yes I am on Freecycle
