OT: For the clothing sewers

My best friend Paul handed me his lined Carhartt vest. Vest is heavy cotton, almost canvas weight, lined in black polyester with a polyester type filler in between that. He was honored with a large [think dinner plate size] emblem that needs to be sewn on the back. I figured the placement of it. Emblem itself is very intricate but is on a black stabilizer that extends a bit around the emblem.

Would you remove the lining to stich the emblem down, then sew it back up? Would a straight stitch work or should it be zigzag? If this wasn't so serious I'd have a go with fancy stitches by hand!

Suggestions? Cautions? thanks in advance, Ginger in CA

Ginger, Having gotten similar 'projects' from DH...if the lining is easily removable, go for it - it will make a nicer finished projects. However, if it's going to be way more trouble than it's worth to put the lining back in place, don't worry about it. The relatively small amount of stitching you will be doing won't affect the insulating effects and no one will ever see it. As to type of stitches to use...if the emblem has an overlocked, finished edge, a straight stich will be fine. If the stabilizer is beyond the edge of the emblem, I'd probably trim the stabilizer and then do a heavy zigzag or overlock type stitch. Good luck.

Permanent fabric glue! ;-)

I'm with Leslie on that one. Permanent fabric glue is the best way to go. Even good old Elmer ( of the school glue memories) makes a nice one and there are many more that would do just fine. You'll save yourself lots of needles, frustration and bandages. Polly

I think I am with Kim and the stitching. I bet either option would work though. Taria

Ginger, I would probably use FabriTac glue by Beacon. It is a non- water soluble glue (so it will wash well) that dries clear and flexible. Doesn't take much and works well.

Based on the responses so far, I am leaning towards the fabric glue, with the stabiliser trimmed to fit the emblem. The biggest thing I worry about with the stitching down is the lining sliding while under the machine's needle. This is not a new vest, but for those of you familiar with the brand, meant to last. The stitching that has the lining sewn to the cotton duck is very strong, and would be difficult to match. I know that Paul has the vest dry-cleaned. Would that make a difference on using a fabric glue?

Well, now, Ginger. If you 'wanted' to sew it, before you put the appliqué on, you could baste the lining to the vest. Just in the area where the emblem is going. When you were through stitching you could remove the basting. That lining wouldn't have the chance to slip/slide. OTOH, just for you, I went over and read my glue bottles, sniffed a few and didn't find one that said okay for dry cleaning. I'm betting there is one. Hiiiii. Polly

Uh, Polly, glue isn't for sniffing! Since Paul doesn't need it right away I can pull it out of it's dry cleaner bag and take a good look at it. The emblem is very heavy duty, almost like a "rug punching" type pile to most of it. Not a dimestore project! But then the Rancheros Vistadores aren't a dimestore type of group of cowboys... Still leaning towards the stitching, guess I am old fashioned.
