OT-got any ideas?

i'm seriously thinking that i could somehow shoot a line up to the top of the 50ft tall ugly floodlight poles with a sign of some sort attached to the end, then pull the sign up to fly in all its glory for the world to see. oh how to do it and what to write on the signs.....

i hate the poles, the one directly behind my house has to go. a neighbour sent a letter to the City Council about it but that all takes forever to get anything done about it. i'm of the opinion that they are there illegally but as the park is owned by the council and they put the resource consent thru to a hearing with their own employees (i think they are paid by the council) who make the decisions on the resource consent it all seems totally ridiculous why they bothered with the consent in the first place.

the council decided that the consent could go thru on a non-notification basis. seems stupid as the consent had to go to a hearing i'm guessing because the max height in the district plan is 10 metres, these are 16.5 metres tall but no one thot we might need to know about it in advance so we could object. the hearing excluded the public, from what i read mainly becuz there were no objections. now how can there be objections when no one was told about it? i think the poles should come done immediately until the proper process is fully gone thru with submissions from the public, ie the neighbouring residential property owners. i asked a park supervisor why they were not telescopic poles that could be retracted when not in use... 'too expensive!' they said. well these poles werent cheap for sure.

now... the sports club wants 3 more poles, this time for night games, consent was only for training. they also want a 10 metre higher fence (they already added an extra bit on top of normal 3 metre tall wire type see-thru fence) added on top. how high all that would be i've no idea, it is out of hand and mind boggling. they also want 3 metre high X 10 metre long seats at the west end of the field. i'm at the west end of the field. the seats would be on the same level as back of our propertys and our fences are the max allowed 2 metres high. so anyone sitting on them can see into our backyards, standing gives them an even better view of our homes and what we do in them.

ok, so there is no way they will get the seats. we dont need a higher ugly fence and we dont want any more poles for night games. night games will 'draw in' the unsavoury useless bored cretians who walk the streets at night with nothing better to do than get into trouble. when the 'training/games' finish and the lights go out those cretians will hang around in the park, essentially in our backyards leaving us unsafe in our own homes, doing who knows what til it is too late and the damage is done. i want those poles down now and then figure out what if anything can be done for those rugby players. i hate rugby even more now as a result of these poles.

so how do i get a banner/flag/sign up the pole and what should it say??? if they can play dirty so can i. fuming in the south pacific, j.

Jeanne -- I don't know how things work in NZ... but if it were happening to me here....

I'd first get copies of all the pertinent rules and regulations. I go through them with a fine tooth comb... and high light every single one they are in violation of. I'd then write a very cordial, detailed letter to the council, copying the local TV news. I'd also be sure to check to see if you have any light ordinances (we do here... how much light from neighboring property can impact yours --- measured in candles or some such thing.

Here -- if the "local government" was cooperative -- I hit the press... and the state representatives around here. Most all of those people here in the states are ELECTED!!! and they don't like bad press! Especially if you have documented proof they are violating their own statutes!

That's my 2 cents... but what you can or should do in NZ ... I've not a clue!!

i think i've been thru all the rules etc. that is why... i think what they did is illegal, tho most certainly it was immoral, underhanded, sneaky, coniving etc etc. the city council (all elected officials) write/approve the district plan. they decide if a resource consent has to be notified or non notified status. they put the resource consent thru in their name as the city owns the property. their own employees from what i can gather are the ones who decide the outcome of a consent hearing. the hearing was only necessary becuz they infringed some of the rules (ie the max height by a whopping 65%). the hearing excluded the public as there were no objections. hard to object to what you dont know about now isnt it. omg, is there anyone in any country that can override the elected governing officials? even the justice system is paid from the same public coffer, our taxes but we really have no rights on some things. i wanna fly a banner from the pole behind my house. keep putting up anything so they have to keep getting a crane in to remove it. i dont care that it will take our taxes to pay for the crane. at this point i just want the damn pole out of my view. every morning i get up, go into kitchen for a cuppa tea and breakfast and what do i see out my window but that damn butt ugly pole in my face. i hate it, i want it out, now now now. take it out and then we will sit and discuss like civilized people why they dont belong there.

the lighting has already been sorted out so that is not the issue. the pole is what i object to. they want to and can only use it for training, only 5 days out of 7 in a week, only from 4pm to 10pm (9pm sunday and public holidays), and only use it from april 1 thru end of august. those few hours in a year but i have to look at it 24/7 the full year. something there is not right. another park across town has similar lights going up but they've had two public meetings, so far the same rulings but they must remove the poles during the rest of the year at least that is something. we've not been afforded the courtesy of any notife at all. why?

so how can i get a banner up to the top, no way to climb it, has to be someway to shoot it up and over, then tie it off and leave no dangling ties on it to pull it off. that should get the media attention without us having to sound like moaners. this is for a rugby club, the national sport, it is damn near sacreligious to complain. argh. jeanne

Oh Jeanne, in my other life -- back when I was a daily newspaper reporter -- I covered city councils and parks departments and counties and...... It's time to either take up whatever game they're playing or sell your property. I'm so sorry. You are fighting what would be a losing cause if it was anyplace I've ever written about.

I'm trying to think of something witty or humorous to say, but I can't. You are, in the words of a little old man I used to know, sitting in the best seats under the crapper.

Good luck, Sunny

hey, i dont think we are fighting a losing cause at all. we just gotta smack those idiots round their collective ear'oles somehow to get their attention. i'm sure not a single person bothered to actually walk around here to see how that pole would look nor have the powers that be bothered yet to see how they look now from a homeowners point of view. they will have to tho if they want us to shut up cuz we wont shut up. it is wrong and the poles have now lowered the value of our propertys. now if they want to pay me a goodly sum such as oh i'd take

10 million...future inflation dont you know...then i'd gladly shut up but for now, i'm loud, proud and they can shove it up their collective backsides, oh wait, they all got their heads there now, well, we'll think of something else to fix their little red wagons. there is the tv show here called Fair Go that fixes all manner of things that go wrong. yes even the councils. no one is above the law/rules, even if they make some of them up themselves. i'm of the opinion to 'take no prisoners' when you truely believe, when all things are considered, that you are right. that other park across town proves my point and sets a precedence of public notification and consultation that they did not bother with in our park. well tough, now they have to bother with us and it is gonna be a whole lot more painful for them after the fact. they are all idiots, oh well. jeanne

Well, Jeanne. There is a way to get your banner up on that @#$! pole. All ( ! ) you need is a bow and arrow sharpshooter. We have one next door who could hit a mosquito a mile away. He was really a help when we had a dangerous tree limb dangling way up too high to reach by any means. Neighbor fired an arrow with a fine line attached to it over the limb. Next, they tied a rope to the line and pulled it up and over the limb. A lot of tugging and yanking and 'voila'! I urge you to try legal and peaceful solutions. Just wanted you to know it could be done. Polly (find out how much bail we'd have to post before proceeding with anything really crazy)

fear not, Ms Polly. i already threw the chain saw and/or axe idea into the bin. was worry'd bout being electricuted and i dont want that. i thot the banner would be as peaceful as i could manage to make my point, considering my frame of mind over this thing. so i need an archer extraordinaire (sp?). then gotta convince him this is ok to do and he wont take the heat for it. as to whether or not it is legal? i'd seriously doubt the council have the brains to figure out which law covers them being such idiots that the only way a regular citizen can get their attention is with a banner hanging from the ugly lightpoles they put up without asking anyone if we minded them going there or not. wheres an archer when you need one... boing boing, jeanne

Well now there is nothing illegal about working roots on them.

Though I like the notion of a good recurve and some kite string. (G)

OK, so......do we now have two kitties for bail money now that this new adventure is taking place or do we just have one BIG kitty to cover bail for all nefarious adventures including Polly's?

We'll have to quit tossing spare pennies in the change trays at the checkout counters and search the lining of old purses. Me thinks we is going to need more funds. I suppose the only fair thing to do would be to post a list of phone numbers and rotating scheduled times the phones will be manned to bail out our more adventurous quilters. Perhaps this could be added to next years directory. RCTQ Bail Bonds...1-800-I-M-N-JAIL.

She's right, you know. Haul them ppls out there---promise them lemonade and brownies or whatever munchy to bring 'em out. We have a program on our one TV Channel that has a fella that tells what happened, what the results are, and how much money was returned to the wronged person. It was in the $$$$. $$ ' s and that was just this year alone.

no need to bail me out if push comes to shove. i'd sit my butt in jail if only for the purpose of getting some action. just had an email from the folks up the road (the ones who asked on the behalf of themselves and we 2 neighbours directly down the hill from them) with a follow up question as to when we can expect to hear from the council. they've had three+ weeks and so far not a sign of anyone on the horizon. the plot thickens. jeanne

i got that on the list of what next to do. i was hoping the council would reply soon. might have a chat with the neighbours about this first. i reckon'd calling the press here for a look/see themselves and judge their reaction to having one of these monstrositys in their backyard, literally. i just realized yesterday the poles are nearly twice the height of the power/light/telephone poles on our street out front. those we must have to live. i dont need the ugly big poles out back to live happily here. up before sparrows fart this morning in the south pacific, jeanne
