OT: graphic design tool ?

been mulling over what i want to really do when I grow up and I have some workable ideas now. One of them involves some graphic designing for which i will need one of those tablet and pen contraptions. (and going back to school...sigh) so.... since the only time i played around with one of those what when they were a brand spankin new to the universe toy, I need suggestions on what to look for and if there is a way to try them out first and where to go to buy them...

I have photoshop CS2 bundle if that helps...

any suggestions welcomed!

I don't use one....but there seems to be a lot of people using the Wacom tablets for that sort of thing. Let us know what you decide.

I have a Wacom Intuos tablet. The smallest one is the right size for me. When I got it there was a place on their website where they walk you thru deciding what size/kind is probably best for you. The tablet is very intuitive to use and I absolutely love it. I'm not sure where to get a demo - I was lucky enough to know someone who had one already. It took me just a couple of minutes playing with it to decide that I wanted one too. I bet you will have a lot of fun once you get one.

Both Staples and Office Depot near me have these set up in their stores so you can test them out. Maybe give some place like that near you a call and see if they do the same.

I've had a Wacom tablet for a long time - my DS2 recommended it for me - I use it with EQ. I found the mouse cumbersome, and for me, using the stylus with the tablet was just natural. I rarely use the mouse for anything. My tablet has a 3 1/2" x 5" working area, which works well for anything I have tried so far. I've been playing for Photoshop lately - still exploring, but enjoying it with the tablet.

From the research that I did when I was looking for one just before christmas, Wacom is the only way to go. I ended up getting a Wacom Bamboo and I love it.

One of those tablet and pen contraptions? Contraptions? I know what a tablet is, and a pen is no problem, but what sort of contraption are you talking about? Debra in VA See my quilts at:

I did a search for "Wacom Intuos tablet" that someone else mentioned and came up with a computer pad and drawing implement. I wouldn't call it a contraption, though happily I don't feel bad about the cost of my trackball anymore. I firmly believe a mouse is something cats eat, not a computer controller. If you are looking for a simple drawing tablet to sketch out quilting designs (for example), the Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet is very reasonably priced and includes the pen, mouse and software. I have been seriously considering this for my long arm business.

The small one is roughly the same price as my trackball, but I would still need the trackball for everything else, wouldn't I? Debra in VA See my quilts at:

I love my Wacom tablet, which was the same size as the monitor screen until DH bought me a new and larger one. I use the tablet instead of the mouse, and most of my hand pain disappeared. You hold the pen just like amy other pen, and tap the screen to register a click. With the larger monitor though, it is a little harder to "mouse" the pen over the tablet. Roberta in D

I used mine in that mode for a while too but I found it was easier to use it and more comfortable for me to use it in 'mouse mode', especially since I use dual monitors. You might try switching to mouse mode and see if that resolves the pin pointing or not, although you might have to try it for a few days to get use to it.
