OT: Help Describing Fabric

I'm still digging out, culling & cleaning. I found a 6 1/2 yard piece of decorator fabric I'd bought at Hancock's last year intending to make draperies with it, and decided later not to. So I decided to try my luck at an on online auction with it. I don't know fabric very well, and don't know what *kind* of fabric this is, to put in the description. It came on a roll, about 56 inches wide. It's not super- heavy like tapestry, but much heavier than regular, say, quilting cotton fabric. It's real smooth to the touch. It does not ravel very bad. Does any of this make sense? Does anyone know how I can describe this? All I've put so far is just "Decorator Fabric". Is that the right term? Thanks! Sherry

That would be Home Decorating fabric. I'd add that it is a nice weight for drapery/curtain use and not upholstery weight. Debra in VA See my quilts at

you could go to the store and find a similar fabric and look what it says on the end of the bolt!

I'd probably put drapery or draperies in the title somewhere.

Hi Sherry - what does it say on the selvage, if anything? Most home dec cottons are scotchgard treated these days - some are teflon treated - hence the smooth finish and the lack of ravelling. jennellh

Yes, but I'm not sure you can tell much by it. I really appreciate everyone's help & suggestions. It was one of those deal where I loved the fabric when I bought it, then after I had it a year, I didn't like so much anymore. That's kind of unusual for me. And there's nothing like six + yards of heavy fabric laying around to remind you of your mistake. :-(

Try having 15 yds that you cut already for the new drapes......then you moved before they were done. This place has 'blinds', which I've never had before, and kinda like. Gonna hafta think a while before I do anything with the drapery fabric. At least I hadn't cut the fabric for the sheers.
