My mom would purchase either Best Foods or Miracle Whip depending on which one was on sale at the time. I personally can't stand either of them.

We grew up with Miracle Whip, and all my family still use it exclusively. We only had real butter on special occasions, as my Dad always said it tasted "greasy"! We switched to real butter as soon as we could afford it, and I have been making all my own bread for most of my married life (39 years). No bread machine, just a large bowl and two hands! I often look back to the time when I had 2 teenage boys in the house, and packed 3 lunches every day - lots of bread! I just made sure that the bread came out of the oven when no one but me was home. DH always remarked that we had one loaf of crustless bread in each batch! As far as odd sandwiches, my Mom and I used to eat peanut butter, miracle whip and lettuce sandwiches. It never caught on with my family, so I'll be the last to consume one here!

When you have the homemade bread around all the time, it's not so much of a treat anymore, though you definitely don't want to eat most of the store-bought bread anymore. I have had a bread machine for 10 or more years and am on my third one. When I make a loaf, I slice it and put it in the freezer. We can then take out as many slices as we want when we want bread. My mother always baked bread, so I grew up on homemade bread; we thought the Wonder bread from the store was a real treat. (I no longer think that!) We always had homemade cookies, too, so it was a treat to have a store-bought cookie at Grandma's. Guess it's all in what you're used to. :)

We always had both in the house because my mom prefered Miricle Whip but my dad preferred mayo.

I have to say Miricle Whip is much better on a peanut butter sandwich than real mayonnaise.

DH much prefers mayonnaise to Miricle Whip. Being as I think the stuff in a jar is bland tasteless poo, I generally take the ten minutes to make some when he wants it. With the mixer, not with a whisk, my poor little wrist muscles are not that strong! That way I can use a spiffy herbed vinegar and it comes out tasting like something.

You bring back a 'funny now' memory. We made homemade bread from when we were little (no machines then) but my Dad LOVED his Mom's bread the most. One day my mom took us kids to Grandmas. She sent a homemade loaf home with us. That night Mom served it with the homemade butter (yes, we HAD cows, too) and dad said:."You finally made it as good as Ma's. My mom cried. Dad was in the dog-house for a week! His mom made the best bread-mom's mom made the best pies and we all knew it.....so did mom. As I got older, it was MY Job to do all the baking. Dad could tell when I made a cake from scratch or from a mix. It got to where the 'mix cakes' were only for HB cupcakes for school or for a cake walk.

Hot chips and mayo sandwich, another favourite I've not had for years.

Love peanut butter on a spoon and with preserves (red raspberry, blackberry or strawberry on sandwiches, NO GRAPE). Can't stand peanut butter cookies, Reese pieces.cups or any other mixture. Another favorite is tuna, mustard, and raw onion on bread. How about cream cheese and preserves on an English muffin.

Knowing when to stop kneading is an art. I haven't been able to learn it although I tried. I can only make an edible loaf that way if I get to make one with someone who has the artistry to do it right. I've kneaded side by side with other people and produced fine loaves by matching them move for move, but I can't feel the change in the dough. If left to my own devices, I'll knead it too long every time. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Unfortunately, it takes more than a week to wear off the yumminess of home baked bread. I tried to go that route once and found myself and DH eating a small loaf of home baked per day. In over 5 years I haven't made a loaf that lasted long enough to actually cool down to room temp. A fresh baked pan of brownies lasts longer around here. Brownies are allowed to cool and get put in a proper container to enjoy over the next several days. Fresh baked bread doesn't stand a chance. A store bought loaf lasts a week so that is what we usually eat. Debra in VA See my quilts at

You should try vanilla ice cream with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top. Yummy.

We would call it ham salad. It is rare to find it already made, but it is sold in some areas, usually in the cold cut and salad section of the stores. Your home made version would be a lot better tasting though. The next closest thing would be canned deviled ham, but it's a whole different thing. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I usually keep both in the house. Egg salad, potato salad, deviled eggs, and tuna salad simply can't be made with MW, you must use mayo. MW does make a good sandwich spread and works nicely in chicken salad. Debra in VA See my quilts at

My Mum used to make "ham salad":

2 pounds of "jumbo" bologna, ground in a hand cranked grinder 1 medium jar of "India" sweet relish Miracle whip salad dressing to make it spreadable

I know there is no ham in this version, we couldn't afford ham, but it was good and we loved it, of course us kids got to crank the handle of the grinder. We didn't know that there was ham salad with real ham in it, or that there was real mayonnaise.
