OT: knee voodoo

I've been away, so missed why your knee is bothering you Sunny, but I am wondering if it is due to arthritis? I suspected I probably had arthritis in my knees & it was confirmed recently by my orthopedic surgeon. Is cortisone helpful? I find going downstairs is much more difficult than going upstairs. One other challenge I've noticed is using public bathrooms - if there isn't a handicapped stall available & I use a regular stall, I have the hardest time getting up, because there isn't anything to hang on to. I hate to pull the TP holders off the walls! Oh yeah - getting down & up from the floor is another new joy:)

Regarding cortisone shots - I've had several in my feet for plantar fasciitis (which FINALLY seems to have gone away after about 5 years!!!!). Each time I got a shot, I had to grit my teeth & try not to cry. I talked my neighbor into going to her doctor & asking for a cortisone shot - I did not tell her it is painful. When I saw her that evening, I asked her if it hurt - she said no - should it have? And her primary gave her the shot, not even a podiatrist. Geesh - was she ever lucky!

I have a trick for when I am forced to use a "regular" toilet. Remember, I not only have arthritis in my knees, hips & back, I have several different types of spinal deformities so I have had to learn all sorts of odd ways to do things :-). When I am ready to stand up from the toilet, I will take several layers of toilet paper and set them on the toilet seat between my legs. Then I put my hand on the TP and leverage myself up off the toilet seat. I'm a pretty heavy woman and this helps a lot in giving me just that littlest bit of extra leverage to take the strain off my knees. This works for me because I use the leverage to lift myself off the seat just a bit and then I bend over at the hips. Then I am able to put my hands on my thighs and sort of "walk" myself up into a standing position. In addition to arthritis, etc. I also have sciatica. I have found that getting myself limber enough to lay my hands flat on the floor not only helps control my sciatica, it has done wonders for my spinal problems AND allows me to take a lot of the strain off my knees! Mind you, it took me about 6 months of daily bending, going very slowly and gently so as not to injure my back. When I started this, I could bend over and touch my legs about 2" below my knees. It hurt my muscles like the dickens but it REALLY made my sciatica better so I just kept at it! Whenever I was out and about and my "parts" started bothering me, I would go to the ladies room or find a secluded corner out of sight of most people and just bend over! Now that I can put my hands on the floor, I use the bending over thing as if I am tying my shoelaces and never get strange looks. At least not until I go down the stairs backwards -- LOLOL! I have a lot of them, some do hurt,.others don't. I don't know the answer..when they DO hurt I just keep reminding myself how much BETTER I'll feel. And so far, so me, they have done a lot more GOOD than bad. so I shall continue getting them --Dr is VERY CAREFUL as to how many and WHERE I get them. I'm scheduled for another next month and yes, I'm looking forward to it.

Butterfly (With your Plantar's...have they given you a set of exercises? I guess I've been lucky there, with a set of stretches and wearing orthodics in my tennis shoes it hasn't returned. No, I didn't get a shot for that)
