OT My mom just called!

She's home from the hospital after her mastectomy yesterday and she sounded really good. Actually, you'd never know she'd just had surgery! She was laughing and joking and her voice sounded like always. She's sore and tired but that's to be expected. The doctor didn't indicate anything unusual happened or that there were any surprises.

So, all things considered it's really good news.

Thanks for all the good wishes/prayers/emails and support, etc.

What good news Leslie! I'm glad she sounded so good. That was a big relief to you, I'm sure. I just spent the whole day taking my mother back to our home town (about 85 miles from my house) so she could visit friends from many many years ago. We made 6 different stops to visit. I'm beat.

PLEASE have your mother see an oncologist. I worked oncology for 5 years (as a nurse administering chemo). Many women came to us years after the surgery with reoccurence - they had never seen an oncologist because the "surgeon got it all". I don't want to scare you but even with negative nodes cancer does often show up elsewhere. My mom had negative nodes (of those tested of course) and then had bone metastasis and eventually died from metastatic breast cancer. Please understand I am glad to hear your mom did well with her surgery but I get so angry when I hear of those that do not get good followup. My mom had followup and did get the Tamoxifen for 5 years which was the standard of treatment for estrogen positive tumors at the time of her surgery. Now the tamoxifen is often given for a longer period of time and actually is given to some women to reduce the risk of even getting breast cancer. RESEARCH. cancer.org and MDAnderson are great sites.

Your mom is in my prayers. Suzzy

What good news. Make sure she follows ALL directions. After the pain pills go away she may find everything isn't great. There will still be pain with movement, but she will need to do exercises.

~hugs to you and your mother~

Leslie, Great news. She may also be numb. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was hurt more emotionally by it. Is she considering reconstruction?. I still have more surgery scar tissue prevented my expander from dropping down. Pami
