OT OT helmets

Friends, My neice's husband was in a bicycle accident on Friday. He was cut off by a van making a right hand turn and flipped over his bike when he tried to brake very hard. He ended up in front of the rear tire and his HEAD and arm were completely run over by the vehicle. The fellow stopped and started to back up and ran over part of his arm again. Here's the best part. He was released from the hospital the next day with a broken elbow and probably a torn muscle(bicep or tricep). In our opinion his bike helmet (and guardian angel!) saved his life. Be sure to wear your helmets and insist your children do the same. We still have a member of our family with us thanks to his helmet. KJ

I've been knocked off my bike by motorists in the US and the UK, so yes, I always wear my helmet! There's a reason they call cyclists "organ donors"....

I'm glad to hear the story had a happy ending! It's so frustrating to see riders - whether on bikes or motorcycles - riding without helmets. And it's even more frustrating the number of motorists who just don't see someone on a bike. So glad to know he's okay.

Jeepers! Scary stuff! Having almost lost my bro at an early age to a car/bicycle interaction, and Little Sis the copper having been knocked off hers, I'm rather wary of ever getting on one again. I'm glad to hear your neice's husband is more or less intact.

Me too Louise. My SIL called yesterday to tell me about it and she started in with all the accident details. It seemed like eons before she got to the bottom line....I was numb because I thought it was going to be the very worst news! Getting your head run over??!! When I talked to him today he said he remembered thinking, "I'm under a car and it's running over my head!!" So hard to believe! The ER doc was surprised there wasn't more damage to the helmet, but suggested he get a new one anyway! It's probably compromised a bit, eh? Sheesh. KJ

So glad about the happy ending.

Helmets are the LAW over here - for ALL ages. I giggle every time I see the next door's 3yo riding his little bike with training wheels on my drive with his helmet on. Failure to wear a helmet even for play on the drive results in mum turning up and confiscating the bike for a week!

Glad to hear a happy ending! I ride almost every day and my dw is always worried some motorist won't see me. Helmets are not optional!

I wish they would do that here! I had a devil of a time getting helmets the right size for my kids only to find they were jeered at by the other kids in the area as *nobody* wears helmets here - I don't from habit I must admit. and my kids won't wear them either :-(

I won't go into the number of times I got concussion from breaking too hard in winter to avoid a slipping car only to fall off and clunk my head on the edge of the pavement - I even did exams one day after a fall like that - first time I ever got an A for administration studies too LOL.

here drivers are always held liable for accidents involving bikes weather it's their fault or not - it makes them a *lot* more careful fortunately

And please lock your car doors. A dear friend of mine was killed simply because his door was not locked; his truck was hit hard from the side and he went flying out the other side into oncoming traffic. Pat, you could get a Sunday helmet, tastefully embellished in autumn colors perhaps? Polly

Nah, I have to give equal time to my "special hats' ... people chide me if I don't wear a hat. I hasten to point out that I am just about the only person wearing hats at this church ... they just joke and tease gently. PAT

Thank goodness he is alive and mostly well......

As for that PS -- my mom got on my case one time when I was telling about someting that happened because she about had a heart attack worrying until I got to the "okay" bit so I've been taught now to preface it with "I'm/DH's/etc. okay so don't worry but...."

We lock our doors religiously now since my DSIL was nearly carjacked out of her truck in Texas a few years ago.....thankfully her doors were locked and they couldn't get in to yank her out....
